BUIES CREEK, N.C. Thanks to another strong effort by Ellis
Lowe (San Diego, Calif.), Campbell improved their current win
streak to four in a row.
Campbell (18-15) defeated Charleston Southern on Wednesday night at
Taylor Field by a score of 9-7.
Charleston Southern (13-23) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after
the top half of the first inning. However, the Camels would respond in
the home half of the first by posting four runs on the
scoreboard.
With Ellis Lowe standing on second and Carlton Floyd (Riegelwood,
N.C.) on third and two outs, Campbell would find its offensive
groove. Zach Johnson
(Smithfield, N.C.) would single through the left side, allowing
Floyd and Lowe to score and tie the game at 2-2. Johnson would come in to score when
Alex Aycoth (Sanford, Fla.) doubled to the right center field
gap. Campbell would get
their final run of the inning on a double steal in which Kevin
Nelson (Sunrise, Fla.) stole second and Aycoth stole home.
Campbell would extend the lead to 6-2 thanks to a two run second
inning. With Graham Fronk
(Charlotte, N.C.) on third and Chris Bangi (Jacksonville, Fla.) on
second, Carlton Floyd would hit a sacrifice fly to center
field. The sacrifice fly
would allow Fronk to score from third base. Campbell would score another run when
Bangi scored on Brian Gana's (Richland, Wash.) single to right
field.
Carlton Floyd got the start on the mound for the Camels. The senior pitched three
complete innings, allowing four runs on six hits, while striking
out two.
CSU would cut the deficit to 6-3 when Tyler Thornburg homered to
left field. The Buccaneers
would then tie the game at 6-6 thanks to a three run fourth
inning. The three runs
scored by CSU were complimented with two Campbell errors.
Campbell would push ahead for good in the bottom of the fifth
inning. With one out,
Stephen Parsons (Chesapeake, Va.) would double to left field,
allowing Alex Aycoth to score from second base. Later in the inning, Chris Bangi drew
a walk and Parsons would advance to third on a wild pitch. Bangi would make a huge turn
around first and got caught in a run down, that run down allowed
Parsons to score to give the Camels an 8-6 lead.
Charleston Southern and Campbell would each post a run in their
respective half of the sixth inning. Campbell extended the lead to 9-7 when
Ellis Lowe hit his fourth home run of the season (and career) to
right center field. The
current home run parade by Lowe has come over the last four outings
for the Camels.
Parker Fleming (Lexington, S.C.) would relieve Carlton Floyd on the
hill. Fleming would pitch
just one complete inning, as two unearned runs came in to score on
two hits. Colin Parker
(Princeton, N.C.) would be the next Campbell pitcher. Parker (1-0) would be credited with
the win after pitching three complete innings allowing just one run
on three hits.
Ryan Hamme (Wilmington, N.C.) would close the door on the
Buccaneers. This was the
first appearance on the bump for the senior in over two weeks. Hamme pitched the final two
innings allowing zero runs and zero hits, while striking out three
batters.
Other top performers at the plate for Campbell were Chris Bangi,
Alex Aycoth and Graham Fronk. Bangi finished the game 2-for-3 with a
run scored, while Aycoth finished 2-of-4 with two runs scored and
an RBI. Lastly, Fronk
finished 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Campbell will depart tomorrow afternoon for the sunshine
state. Campbell will face
league leader Jacksonville for a three game conference tilt on
Friday and Saturday.
Friday's single game will begin at 6:30 p.m., while Saturday's
doubleheader is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
