Football Falls To Marist 42-14

Box Score

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell's football team (2-6, 1-4 Pioneer Football League) lost the team's fifth home game of the season in a 42-14 loss to Marist (3-5, 2-4 PFL) on Saturday, Oct. 30 in the team's annual Homecoming Game. The Camels cut the deficit to seven in the third quarter, but were never able to fully close the gap in the loss. CU has not won a Homecoming Game in the school's three-year football history.

Redshirt junior running back C.J. Oates led the team with 59 yards rushing and also caught four passes for 28 yards in the loss. Redshirt senior quarterback Daniel Polk completed a career-high 20 passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns for the Camels. Marist was led by quarterback Tommy Reilly, who connected on 21 of 29 passes for 313 yards and three scores. James LaMacchia benefited with 11 receptions for 151 yards The Campbell offense gained 23 first downs to 22 for Marist. The CU offense was outgained in the game 418 to 372. Campbell did have the edge in rushing yards 193 to 105, but trailed in passing yardage 313 to 179.

The Red Foxes took the opening kick and drove down the field on a 13 play, 73 drive that covered 6:35 in clock time and was finished on Calvin McCoy's one-yard scamper. The made extra point from Jason Myers made the score 7-0 with 8:25 remaining in the opening quarter.

Marist marched down the field in their second drive and scored on Ryan Dinnebeil's three-yard rush. The extra point from Myers increased the margin 14-0 with 12:57 remaining in the second quarter. The drive covered 71 yards in eight plays.

CU's offense got on the board on the ensuing drive as redshirt junior Alex Royal was able to haul in a 6-yard pass from redshirt senior Daniel Polk to cap of a nine play, 57 yard drive. The Adam Willets extra point was good to cut the deficit to 14-7 with 1:04 remaining in the half.

Marist's offense, after a 51-yard kick return from Jaquan Bryant to set up the drive, scored the team's third touchdown of the opening half as Reilly connected with LaMacchia on an 11-yard touchdown. The Myers extra point made the halftime margin 21-7 against CU.

After the break the Camels again cut the deficit to seven on Polk's seven-yard touchdown pass to redshirt junior Harrison Jordan. The touchdown and made extra point from Willets completed a nine play, 69 yard drive and make the score 21-14 with 11:26 left in the third quarter. The touchdown pass was the second of the game for Polk and would be as close as Campbell would get the rest of the game.

The Camels' special teams unit then came up with a big play after a defensive stop with true freshman Kurt Odom blocking the punt attempt to give Campbell the ball on the Marist 26-yard line. The CU offense was stymied though and Marist recorded a blocked field goal to stop CU's momentum and scoring opportunity.

The Marist offense capitalized on the change in momentum and went on an eight play, 83-yard drive that was again completed on Reilly's touchdown pass to LaMacchia. The made extra point from Myers again put the deficit at 14 with 1:16 remaining in the third quarter.

After a defensive stop the Marist offense would score again on Reilly's 80-yard pass to Michael Rios. The 80-yard touchdown play was the longest against Campbell since Morehead State's David Hyland's 100-yard interception touchdown from the 2008 season. The Myers extra point was good to increase the score to 35-14 with just over 13 minutes remaining in the game.

A Campbell turnover on the kick-off gave Marist a short field to work with and the Red Foxes would score the team's sixth touchdown of the day on Dinnebeil's 10-yard touchdown run. The Myers extra point made the score 42-14 with 10:44 remaining in the game.

Campbell finishes up the 2010 home schedule with a 1 p.m. game with Valparaiso on Nov. 6 at Barker-Lane Stadium.
