BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Campbell posted its best offensive outing this
season with 19 runs off of 19 hits as the Camels defeated LaSalle
19-7 on Wednesday night from Taylor Field.
Campbell was led by
Alan
Denman, Alex Aycoth, and David Rivera who all
registered three RBI each for the Fighting Camels in the win. The
offensive output for the Fighting Camels was the highest mark since
May 11, 2009 against Alabama A&M when Campbell pounded out 23
runs.
Ben Brown started the
contest on the mound and pitched four innings, scattering three
hits and allowing just one earned run. With the win Brown moves to
1-2 on the season.
The loss was credited
to Kevin Fuqua who pitched two plus innings for LaSalle as he
allowed just two earned runs off of three hits. Fuqua was taken
out of the contest in the third inning after he came up injured
while fielding a Kevin Nelson bunt. Fuqua
with the loss moves to 0-2 on the campaign.
The scoring started
in the second inning for Campbell as the Fighting Camels batted
around in the inning scoring seven runs off of seven hits. Chris
Bangi sent an RBI double to right center that scored Blake Boyce to score
the first run of the inning. Later it was an Ellis
Lowe RBI double to the same spot that brought around Kevin
Nelson from second. The scoring continued with a two RBI
single through the left side from Alan
Denman that cleared the bases and brought the Campbell lead to
5-0. Campbell increased their lead again with a Alex
Aycoth single to left field that sent Denman to cross the
plate. Zach Johnson became the
sixth Fighting Camel to cross home plate with as he scored on an
error from catcher Adam Kammler. The final run was registered with
a Josh Holskey groundout to
first base that brought Aycoth across the plate.
In the fifth inning
LaSalle (1-6) posted a large scoring inning of their own as Brendan
Norton sent a first pitch offering from Colin Parker deep to
right field for a grand slam. That marked the first home run for
Norton on the campaign.
Campbell
(8-4) followed that inning with a six spot in the sixth and a
three runs in the seventh. The highlight of these two innings came
from the bat of freshman David
Rivera who smashed a 1-0 offering to left field for not only
his first home run in a Campbell uniform but also his first
hit.
Campbell will head
down to Macon, Ga. for their first conference series against the
Mercer Bears on Friday and Saturday. The Camels will return home
to Taylor Field to face off against Maryland-Eastern Shore in a two
game midweek tilt on Tuesday and Wednesday.
