MACON, GA
- Mercer scored five runs in the first inning and never trailed to
defeat Campbell 10-1 in Atlantic Sun baseball action on Sunday
afternoon at Claude Smith Field.
David Randall pitched a gem for the Bears as the sophomore went 6.2
innings while giving up four hits and just an earned run. With the
win Randall moves to 3-0 on the 2010 season.
Matt
Sergey was credited with the loss as the junior struggled for
his second straight outing. The righty pitched 3.2 innings while
giving up eight earned runs off of eight hits; the decision drops
Sergey to 1-2 on the campaign.
The scoring started in the bottom half of the first inning as the
home standing Bears carved five runs off of four hits. Tyler
McCarty started the afternoon scoring off for Mercer as he crossed
home plate following a balk from Sergey. Later in the inning it
was a Thomas Carroll RBI single up the middle and a Joe Winker
three run shot to right center that finished up the offensive
onslaught in the first.
Campbell (9-6, 1-2 A-Sun) was able to get a runner across in the
top of the fourth as Alan
Denman led off the inning with a triple down the right field
line. Alex Aycoth brought Denman
home as the senior grounded out to second to register the RBI.
Mercer (12-5, 2-1 A-Sun) answered that one run by Campbell with
four more in the fourth as McCarty sent an offering from Sergey to
left field to collect a two RBI double. That was the end of the
outing for Sergey and upon Jeff Rydman taking over the
pitching duties he gave up an RBI single to Nick DiMauro. DiMauro
later crossed the plate following an error from Campbell shortstop
Kevin Nelson to bring the
score to 9-1 following four complete.
The fifth inning was no kinder to the Fighting Camels as Mercer
scored two more runs off of a pair of Campbell errors.
Runs kept piling on Campbell in the seventh as pinch hitter Travis
Benn entered the game and slammed a three run bomb to left field
that brought home two other Bears. Carroll later sent an offering
from Campbell reliever Parker Fleming down the
right field line to bring around the fourth Mercer run of the
inning to push the lead to 15-1.
In the eighth though Campbell pushed across a duo of runners as Logan
Self singled to left field to register his only RBI of the
contest and Bryce Grady sacrifice flew
out to left field that scored the final Campbell run of the
contest.
Campbell
will be back in action at home on Tuesday and Wednesday against
Maryland Eastern Shore. Tuesday will feature a doubleheader
between the Fighting Camels and the Hawks with a first pitch
scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Wednesday will be just one contest
starting at 4:00 p.m.
