BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Joe
Wagstaff, Corey
Carver, Jonathan Lopez, Parker
Fleming, Colin Parker, Daniel
Gardo and Luke Pritchett combined to
post a five hit shutout in a 13-0 victory over Maryland Eastern
Shore on Wednesday afternoon at Taylor Field.
The pitching
performance was the first nine inning shutout since April 15, 2008
when the Fighting Camels defeated North Carolina A&T 4-0. Joe
Wagstaff started the contest for Campbell on the mound and was
on the winning side of the decision after going three innings,
giving up just two hits. Wagstaff moves to 1-0 on the season with
the victory.
UMES (0-15) never had
more than two baserunners on the basepaths during a single
inning and only had two runners advance to third during the
contest.
Campbell
(12-6) started their scoring attack in the second inning as the
Camels put up five runs on just two hits. UMES starting pitcher
Cameron Zimmerman struggled on the mound as leadoff hitter Cameron
Nelson crushed a 3-1 offering to right field for his second
home run in as many games. The second run of the inning came with
a Kevin Nelson sacrifice fly
to right field that scored Blake
Boyce. DJ Johnson notched the third
run off of an error by Hawks' starting first baseman Lucas Koenig.
Later Alan
Denman raked in his only RBI as he sent a 1-2 offering, from
relief pitcher Tony Gonzalez, to right center. Gonzalez later sent
a wild pitch to the backstop that scored Ellis Lowe for the
fifth and final run of the inning.
Campbell followed up
that performance with a run in the third, three in the fifth as
well as two in both the sixth and eighth inning.
In the sixth inning,
Josh Holskey came into the
contest as a pinch hitter and on the first offering from John
Deschamps, Holskey sent a two RBI dinger down the left field line
for his second homerun of the season.
In the eighth inning
Noah
Zipko grounded into a fielder's choice but registered the RBI
as Cameron
Nelson scampered across home plate to bring the score to 12-0.
Later in the inning it was the fourth error of the game by Hawks'
starting shortstop J.J. Corriveau that allowed Josh
Holskey to score.
Cameron Zimmerman was
dealt the loss for UMES as the righty went 1.2 innings, allowed
four earned runs off of just one hit. The starting pitcher gave up
two hits and hit three batters in his outing.
The three game sweep
for the Fighting Camels was the first since February 20-21 as
Campbell took three straight from North Carolina A&T.
Kennesaw State is
next on the docket for Campbell as they will face off against the
Owls in a three game Atlantic Sun matchup starting on Friday
evening at 6:00 p.m. The series will continue and conclude on
Saturday as the two will face off in a doubleheader starting at
1:00 p.m.
