BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Alan
Denman hit the go ahead two RBI double into right center field
to push Campbell to a 9-5 victory in game two of the doubleheader
against Savannah State on Saturday afternoon. Savannah State
powered past the Fighting Camels 21-5 in game one earlier in the
day.
Savannah State
was able to bounce back from a disappointing 16-1 defeat to the
Camels in game one of the series to come back and put on an
offensive display in game two as the Tigers powered 21 runs off
of 25 hits. The game was the second longest of the season as the
contest went four hours and 29 minutes and neither team was able to
retire the other in order. Campbell also fell to 0-3 when the
opponents score first in a contest, the Fighting Camels are 6-1
when they score first.
The scoring came early and often for the Tigers, who picked up
their first win against a Division I opponent in the 2010 season.
Savannah State scored four runs in the first, one in the second,
four in the fourth, three in the seventh, four in the eighth and
five in the ninth. Campbell starting pitcher Matt
Sergey was knocked out of the game early lasting just 1.2
innings for Campbell while giving up three runs off of seven hits.
Sergey falls to 1-1 on the season.
Campbell was able to draw within two runs as they scored two runs
in the bottom of the third to bring the score 5-3. From that point
Campbell was outscored 16-2 by the visitors. The 21 runs given up
by the Campbell offense was the most given up by the Fighting
Camels since March 21, 2009 when they gave up the same to East
Tennessee State.
The
Fighting Camels were led by four players who registered multiple
hits including (2-for-4),
(2-for-4),
(2-for-3),
and (2-for-3). also registered
three RBI off of an RBI single in the first, and a two run round
tripper that he sent to deep left field. Zach

Joseph McCrary was the ringleader for Savannah State as the third
baseman went 4-for-5 and five RBI for the Tigers in game two. Six
Savannah State players had three hits on the contest including
Dexter Kelly, Jonathan Ross, Matthew Nowacki, Emory Barkley, and
John Arnold. Ross, Kelley, Nowacki, Barkley, McCrary and Arnold
all registered multiple RBI for the Tigers as well in game one.
The Tigers rode the arm of Michael Allegretti who went seven
innings while giving up just four runs. The junior went the
longest of any opposing pitcher this season that the Fighting
Camels have faced in not only innings but also pitches thrown as
Allegretti stayed in the game for 132 pitches. Allegretti, with
the win, moves to 1-2 on the 2010 campaign for Savannah State.
Campbell (6-4)
received a great pitching performance from Logan Davis in game two
as the senior lasted 7.1 innings while giving up five runs. Davis
was not a factor in the decision though as Savannah State tied the
contest in the eighth inning and Daniel Gardo pitched 1.2
innings of one hit baseball to pick up his first win of the season
(1-0).
Campbell and Savannah
State went toe to toe with each other through five innings but in
the bottom of the sixth inning Campbell pushed ahead 5-4 off of a
gutsy double steal when Bryan Braswell stole second
and Zach Johnson rushed
home.
The lead only lasted
into the top of the eighth when Matthew Nowacki sent a RBI double
to right field that brought around Jonathan Ross to score the tying
run.
The tie was broken in
the bottom of the eighth when Denman sent his RBI double into right
center field. Later in the inning it was RBI hits from Logan Self and DJ
Johnson that pushed the score to the final margin of 9-5.
Savannah State (2-9)
was led by Jonathan Ross in game two with a 2-for-4 outing with an
RBI. Kevin Herlihy picked up the loss for the Tigers as the righty
went 2.2 innings giving up five runs off of seven hits and moves to
0-2.
Campbell will be back
in action at Taylor Field on Tuesday with a 6:00 p.m. start against
LaSalle. LaSalle sits at 0-5 on the season as they have dropped
three contests to NC State while getting outscored 65-15 and have
dropped two one run contests to Old Dominion this weekend.
