DELAND, FLA. -- Stetson used a four run
fourth inning to race past Campbell, 7-2, in game one of the
Atlantic Sun Conference series on Thursday night at Melching Field
at Conrad Park.
Stetson starting pitcher Jacob deGrom
pitched a beauty for the Hatters as the junior fanned five through
five innings and only gave up one run, which wasn't earned, in his
6.2 innings of work while registering the win
(2-1).
Stetson (14-14, 2-2 A-Sun) started the
scoring off with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Spencer
Theisen sent a double down the left field line to reach scoring
position and later was driven in by a RBI single through the right
side from the bat of Nick Rickles. Later with Rickles sitting at
second, Kurt Schluter sent a groundball to the hole on the left
side but Kevin Nelson ranged over and made a spectacular play to
third base to get Rickles out to end the Stetson
threat.
Campbell starter Frank Zier ran into
trouble in the fourth inning as the sophomore gave up four runs.
The inning started off well for Stetson as Ryan Lashley singled up
the middle to leadoff. Zier was able to get the first out as
Spencer Theisen flew out to Ellis Lowe in shallow center field but
then gave up a single through the left side to Nick Rickles that
advanced Lashley to third. Robert Crews then walked to load the
bases.
Zier gained his composure and struck out
Kurt Schluter swinging but James Rasmussen knocked in two runs off
of a single to left field. The next batter up was Sean Emory and
he proceeded to drive in another run as he singled to center
field. This marked the end of the contest for Zier and he gave way
to Ryan Mattes. Mattes offered up an RBI single to left field to
Mark Jones that scored Rasmussen from third. Mattes got the Camels
out of the inning as Aaron Crittenden grounded out to
first.
Campbell (17-10, 4-6 A-Sun) finally
advanced a runner to second base as DJ Johnson led off the top of
the sixth with a single to right field and Chris Bangi advanced
Johnson to second as the Jacksonville native registered the second
walk of the game for the Diamond Camels. Ellis Lowe stepped up to
the plate and grounded into a fielders choice but on the double
play attempt from shortstop to first base the throw went errant
from shortstop Ryan Lashley and allowed Johnson to score from
third.
Stetson scored again in the bottom of
the sixth as Robert Crews led off with a single up the middle and
later advanced to second off of a wild pitch offering from Ryan
Mattes. Crews moved to third as Kurt Schluter grounded out to
second base. With a runner at third it was James Rasmussen who
registered his third RBI of the contest as the freshman hit a
single to shallow center field. Mattes offered up a walk to have
runners at first and second but Alan Denman came up with the third
out as the junior caught a screaming line drive to first
base.
Campbell was able to threaten in the top
of the seventh as with two outs Campbell had Zach Johnson, who
reached via the Jacob deGrom walk, at third and Cameron Nelson, who
advanced Johnson with a single to right center, at first. Stetson
went to the bullpen and brought in David Burns who got Bryan
Braswell to ground into a fielders choice to end the
threat.
Campbell scratched across a run in the
top of the eighth as DJ Johnson reached courtesy of the walk given
up by David Burns and Chris Bangi hammered a double down the right
field line that advanced Johnson to third. Alan Denman came up to
the plate after Lowe registered the second out of the inning and
brought Johnson across the plate as a result of his sacrifice fly
to right field and brought the score to 6-2. Stetson again went to
their bullpen to get the out of a jam and reliever Robbie Powell
did just that as the sophomore got Alex Aycoth to fly out to left
field to register the third out.
Stetson wasn't finished though as James
Rasmussen registered the seventh Stetson run off of the Mark Jones
RBI triple to right center field that brought the final margin to
7-2.
Campbell starter Frank Zier was charged
with the loss as the sophomore went 3.2 innings, gave up five
earned runs off of eight hits. Zier drops to 3-4 on the season
with the decision.
These two teams will face off
again Friday afternoon in a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader from Melching
Field at Conrad Park.
