BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Zach Johnson belted his 60th double of his
career in the third inning of game number two to break the career
mark for two-baggers, set by Ryan Hamme from 2006-2009, in leading
Campbell to a sweep of North Carolina Central by scores of 16-2 and
27-4.
Cameron Nelson led the way for the Fighting Camels as the junior
finished the twinbill going 6-for-8 with four RBI and five runs.
Zach Johnson also went 4-for-6 with seven RBI. The Campbell
pitching staff also had a positive outing as they allowed just two
earned runs over 14 innings of play.
Campbell with the
sweep moves to 22-21 on the campaign while North Carolina Central
falls to 2-39.
Campbell sent 19 batters to the plate in the first inning and
scored 14 runs en route to a 16-2 victory over visiting North
Carolina Central in the first game of a doubleheader at Taylor
Field.
NCCU starter Glenn Frye (1-9) walked five batters, hit two more,
gave up one hit and did not retire any of the eight batters he
faced.
Zach Johnson's three-run homer, his sixth blast of the year, was
the big blow as the Camels scored 14 runs off eight hits in the
opening frame alone.
The Camels had 11 hits in the opener, scheduled for seven innings.
Three Camel pitchers scattered nine Central hits and allowed just
two unearned runs.
Zach Johnson finished 2-for-3 with 4 RBI at the plate. Alex Aycoth
and Cam Nelson both went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Chris Bangi
extended his streak to 39-straight games of reaching base via a hit
or walk. The senior outfielder walked and scored, then had a
two-run single in the first inning before he was lifted for a
pinch-hitter.
Central scored a pair of unearned runs in the sixth. Nate Smith
singled and eventually scored on an error to break up the shutout.
Edward Pegues singled in Kurt Wilson with the second Eagle run.
Camel starter Jeff Rydman (3-2) earned the win by allowing just two
singles and striking out 3 in 3 innings of work.
Etienne Farquharson had a pair of singles to lead the NCCU
attack.
In game two Campbell
bats came out hot yet again as Josh Holskey slammed a round-tripper
to deep left field in the second which capped off a seven run
inning.
Campbell batted
through the order twice in the fourth inning, scoring 12 runs off
of nine hits.
Central was able to
get on the board in the sixth as Richie Gaito walked in two runs
and Edward Pegues grounded out to first to bring across Nate
Smith. In the eighth the Eagles scored another run as Smith
scorched a triple to right center to score Ross Plummer.
In the bottom half of
the inning Campbell third baseman David Rivera sent a full count
offering from James "Tater" Jordan over the left field fence to
score the final two runs of the contest.
Campbell starter
Logan Davis (5-3) registered the win by allowing just two hits in
three innings of work.
Ross Plummer had a
pair of hits for the Eagles.
The Camels will head to Durham to face off against the Eagles in a
second doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 2:00
p.m. from historic Durham Athletic Park.
