Box Score

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Carl Smith and Jordan Cramer ran for career-high rushing totals and Campbell defeated visiting Butler 38-23 in a Pioneer Football League match-up Saturday at Barker-Lane Stadium / Ed Gore Field.

A fifth-year senior from Pinetops, N.C., Smith ran 30 times for 148 yards (4.9 per rush) and two touchdowns.  Cramer, a fifth-year senior from Wake Forest, N.C., carried 11 times for 70 yards (6.4 per attempt) and a score.

Quarterback Braden Smith completed 15-of-19 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns.  Paul Constantine had six receptions for 98 yards, including a 64-yard TD catch.  Jonathan Rogers added a score for the Camels on a 32-yard reception.

Campbell (2-3, 1-2 PFL) led 10-9 at the half, then out-gained the Bulldogs 334-204 and held a 22:15-to-7:45 advantage in time of possession over the final two quarters.  Butler (3-3, 1-2) had the ball for only 3:13 of the final period.

Andrew Huck completed 34-of-47 passes for 381 yards and two touchdowns for Butler.  Brendan Shannon finished with 10 receptions for 87 yards, while Zach Watkins had 8 grabs for 155 yards, including a 67-yard scoring catch.  Jordan Ridley finished with 14 total tackles for the Bulldogs.

On the opening possession of the third quarter, Huck dropped back to pass, but fumbled when Milton Brown knocked the ball loose.  Jeremiah Robinson recovered at midfield.  Carl Smith capped a 10-play drive (which included nine rushes) with a 2-yard plunge on 3rd-and-goal to put the Camels in front 17-9 with 9:08 left in the quarter.

Late in the 3rd period, Butler attempted a fake punt on 4th-and-2 from its own 32-yard line, but Constantine knocked Jordan Ridley's pass down.

On the next play, Braden Smith connected on a 32-yard pass with Rogers, who leaped between two Butler defenders in the end zone to make the grab and give the Camels a 24-9 lead.

The following possession produced a one-play scoring drive when Huck hit Watkins down the left hash marks for a 67-yard TD catch and run to cut the gap to 24-16.

Ridley forced a Kurt Odom fumble and Ross Teare recovered at the Butler 49, but the Camel defense forced the first of two-straight three-and-outs.

After taking over at its own 15-yard line, the Camels scored again when Braden Smith hit Constantine in the right flat on a 3rd-and-6.  Constantine, a senior from Raleigh, N.C., broke a tackle and scampered down the right sideline for a 64 yards and 31-16 Camel lead.

Following the second Butler 3-and-out, Campbell embarked on a 12-play, 70-yard scoring drive that ate up 6:15 on the clock.  Cramer carried the final 5 yards for the score to put CU in front 38-16 with 4:16 to play as the Camels gained all their yards on the ground in the stretch.

Butler drove 79 yards and cut the margin to 38-23 when Huck connected on a 41-yard scoring pass with Jeff Larsen with 2:57 to play.

However, Preston Dodson leaped high to grab the ensuing onside kick and the Camels ran out the clock for their first PFL victory of the season.

Twice during the opening half Butler had first-and-goal situations inside the five-yard line.  However, the Camel defense held Butler to a pair of David Lang field goals.

After Lang's 22-yarder left Butler with a 6-0 lead with 7:48 remaining in the period, the ensuing kickoff went out of bounds at the Campbell 41.

The Camels drove 54 yards on 7 plays and took the lead on Carl Smith's 16-yard run.  Smith carried 6 times for 48 yards in the drive.

CU then forced a 3-and-out on the following possession.  Michael Wilson's 20-yard punt gave the Camels the ball at the Butler 28.  Adam Willets hit a 37-yard field goal to put the Camels in front 10-6.

Lang's third field goal of the half, a 35-yarder with 3 seconds left, pulled Butler within 10-9 at the break.

Butler out-gained Campbell 256-115 in the first period and made 17 first downs to 7 for the Camels.  Andrew Huck completed 22-of-29 passes for 175 yards and ran for 42 more.

Smith ran 10 times for 57 yards in the opening period for the Camels.  Braden Smith completed 5-of-8 passes for 33 yards.

Campbell returns to action next Saturday at PFL rival Marist in a 12:00 p.m. kick-off.
