BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell tallied its fifth shutout of the season and Ryan Thompson notched his school record 20th career save Sunday in a 3-0 win over visiting UNC Asheville at Jim Perry Stadium.
Campbell moved to 25-12 on the year and 11-4 in Big South play with the win, while Asheville fell to 11-26 overall and 4-11 in conference games. The three-game sweep marked Campbell's fourth of the season, and third in Big South weekend sets.
The Camels' fifth shutout is one shy of the school record, set in 2012, and matched in 2013.
Thompson, a senior from Turner, Ore., came into Sunday's game in the top of the eighth for his 10th save of the year, and 20th in his two seasons in Buies Creek. The righty tied J.T. Thomas' (1995-98) career record with his 19th save in Saturday's win.
With 10 more saves this season, Thompson also ties his own single-season record from 2013, shared with Ryan Mattes, who posted 10 saves in 2012.
Thompson struck out four in two innings of relief, allowing just two hits, and extending his streak of consecutive scoreless innings to an outstanding 29.
Ryan Koopman (5-1) pitched seven innings in his fifth win, allowing three hits with two strikeouts and only one walk in his third-straight quality start.
The Camels put two on the board in their first turn at the plate, with Matt Nadolski singling in Danny Pardo, and Seth LaRue following with a RBI double with two outs.
Six innings later, Pardo gave the Campbell lead some padding, dropping a single into shallow center to knock in James Moody for his second hit of the day, giving the Camels a 3-0 advantage, and the game its final total.
Pardo and Nadolski both went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run in the win. Pardo, a freshman from Pembroke Pines, Fla., also stole his 12th base of the season.
Corey Randall (1-4) took the loss for the Bulldogs, allowing three runs on six hits with three punchouts and a walk. Elliot Criss pitched a perfect eighth, striking out one.
Tanner Bush paced the Bulldogs at the plate, going 2-for-3.
The Camels clinched the series with a 9-3 win Saturday as Matt Parrish drove in three runs on two of Campbell's 10 team hits. Campbell took game one Friday 7-1 behind a career-high 13 strikeouts from Heath Bowers.
The Camels will head on the road for their next six outings, including a three-game set at Radford April 17-19. Campbell will also travel to North Carolina A&T (April 15), North Carolina State (April 22) and Virginia Tech (April 23).
