ROCK HILL, S.C. – Tyler Herb went eight innings on the mound and Connor Owings picked up three hits to lead No. 6 Coastal Carolina past No. 3 seed Campbell 9-2 Tuesday in the Big South Championship at Winthrop Ballpark.
Coastal Carolina improved to 24-31 on the season, advancing to play No. 2 Winthrop tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. The Camels dipped to 35-19 with the loss, and will face No. 7 Charleston Southern in an elimination game at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.
Herb (7-6) tossed eighth innings with two runs on five hits, striking out five and walking two in the win.
Chase Adkins pitched the ninth for the Chanticleers, issuing a two-out walk.
Campbell starter Heath Bowers (9-3) took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk in 7 1/3.
Bobby Thorson pitched 2/3 of a frame, surrendering four runs, three earned, on three hits with a walk and a strikeout. John Allen tossed the ninth for CU, only allowing a walk.
Connor Owings went 3-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored, while Tyler Chadwick and Colin Hering each drove in two.
The Camels put up the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning with Matt Parrish's RBI groundout scoring Steven Leonard from third after the catcher moved from first to third on Matt Nadolski's base hit.
Coastal took a 4-1 lead in the third, with back to back RBI base hits with two on and one out, followed by a RBI groundout from Kane. Chadwick capped off the inning with another RBI single.
The Camels got a run back in the bottom of the inning, with Will Albertson singling up the middle, scoring Matt Nadolski to make it 4-2.
After Bowers retired 13 Chanticleers in a row after allowing four runs in the third, Anthony Marks' leadoff single ended the streak to lead off the eighth.
Two Campbell errors coupled with four Coastal hits added five runs for the Chanticleers in the frame, making the score 9-2.
Matt Nadolski went 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Camels, while 1-for-4, driving in a run.
