CHARLESTON, S.C. – Down 10-7 at the break, Charleston Southern rallied for 27 unanswered points in the second half to defeat visiting Campbell 34-10 Thursday night at Buccaneer Field.
Charleston Southern moves to 3-0 with the win, while Campbell dips to 0-3. The game marked Campbell's second outing in six days.
Campbell led 10-7 at halftime after freshman Mitchell Brown gave the Camels the lead on a season-long 44-yard field goal with 3:27 on the clock in the second quarter.
CSU led 7-0 after its first possession, going 84 yards on five plays, capped off with an Austin Brown pass to Nathan Prater.
After forcing a CSU punt, Campbell took over on its own 36, driving 64 yards on eight plays, including a 44-yard pass from Dakota Wolf to Jabri Ridenhour on 3rd-and-9 from the CSU 48. The two connected again on the five-yard touchdown pass, finding Ridenhour in the corner of the endzone to knot the game at 7-all.
After the break, CSU regained the lead on its opening drive, highlighting the possession with a 51-yard pass from Brown to Kenny Dinkins. Christian Reyes then punched in a one-yard touchdown, putting the Bucs on top 13-10 after a failed point after.
CSU added another score at the end of the third quarter on a Danny Croghan run, and two more in the fourth to pull away.
Charleston Southern's option attack gained 243 yards on the ground, while Brown and Croghan combined for 162 more passing. Campbell ended the night with 80 yards rushing after gaining 74 in the first half.
Brown paced CSU with 85 yards rushing, adding 154 through the air with two touchdowns, going 8-for-15. Reyes added 56 yards rushing with a score, also hauling in a nine-yard pass.
Keith Goss led Campbell with 43 yards rushing on eight carries and 21 yards receiving on three catches. DeShawn Jones posted 29 yards on seven attempts, while Ridenhour, a redshirt senior, caught four passes for 64 yards, including the touchdown.
Aaron Brown topped the CSU defense with nine tackles, including one for a loss, while Gabe Middlebrook tallied seven stops. Skyler Skersick and Tanner Rogers each picked up a sack for the Bucs.
Ugonna Awuruonye, a redshirt junior defensive end, gathered a season-high nine tackles, while Jake Barr posted eight. Luke Hill recorded six tackles, while Andrew Yost notched five in the loss.
After the bye week, the Camels return home on Sept. 27 for their Pioneer Football League opener against Valparaiso on CU Family Weekend.
