BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Christian Robinson's two-yard touchdown run with 14 seconds left lifted Morehead State to a 31-27 Pioneer Football League win over Campbell Saturday at Barker-Lane Stadium.
In front of a Barker-Lane Stadium record crowd of 6580 that saw the lead change four times in the fourth quarter, the Eagles won on a 12-play drive that covered 64 yards and was helped along by a Campbell unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
Campbell led 27-24 after Kameron Bryant hit Andre Davis with a 13-yard scoring pass with 2:33 remaining to cap an 8-play, 69-yard march.
However, the Eagles drove deep into Campbell territory and had a first and goal at the Campbell four when Austin Gahafer hooked up with Justin Cornwall on a 20-yard completion. On third and goal from the four, Gahafer's pass was batted away by Alan Hart, but the Campbell safely was flagged for kicking the ball.
Instead of setting up for a potential game-tying field goal attempt, the Eagles took the lead on Robinson's two-yard run and Shavi Bash's point after.
Gahafer finished the day completing 35 passes in 58 attempts for 328 yards and two interceptions. Cornwall had 14 receptions for 123 yards, while Brent Holman ran 10 times for 79 yards for the Eagles (4-3, 3-1).
Kameron Bryant completed 8-of-17 passes for 74 yards and one score and was intercepted twice. De'Shawn Jones ran 11 times for 51 yards, while Austin Fleming ran nine times for 43 yards and added 23 yards on two receptions for the Camels (4-4, 2-3), whose three league losses have come by a total of eight points.
After trailing 13-10 at halftime, Gahafer gave Morehead State a 17-13 lead with 5:51 left in the third on a 9-yard quarterback keeper.
Fleming and Jones combined to on a 12-play, 78-yard drive to give the Camels a 20-17 edge. Fleming ran five times for 30 yards and three first downs, the final seven for the score. Jones ran six times for 48 yards, including a 28-yard scamper, in the drive.
But Morehead answered with a nine-play, 68-yard march to go in front on Robinson's first TD run, a three-yard rush that put MSU in front 24-20 with 6:31 to go.
Jake Barr led Campbell with 11 tackles, while D.J. Jones added 10. Eric Pugh and Ryan Bennett had nine tackles apiece for Morehead.
Morehead State finished with a 338-103 advantage in total yards, but Campbell scored twice on returns – Aaron Blockmon's 95-yard kickoff return and Chris Beaty's 50-yard pick six – in the opening half.
Morehead State drove 83 yards on 12 plays to take the lead on its second possession. A 29-yard fourth-down completion by Gahafer to Justin Cornwall set up the Eagles with a first-and-goal at the Campbell 10. Brent Holman then ran in from 10 on the next play.
However, Blockmon cut up the middle and down the right sideline on the ensuing kickoff for a 95-yard return. Mitchell Brown's PAT tied the game with 8:02 left in the opening period.
Campbell went in front when Chris Beaty intercepted Gahafer's pass and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown. However, Brown's PAT hit the left upright and the Camel lead stood at 13-7 with 2:36 remaining in the half.
Shavi Bash hit a 36-yard field goal on the last play of the second quarter to cut Campbell's lead to 13-10.
Morehead out-gained the Camels 275-95 in the opening period and picked up 13 first downs, compared to five for the Camels.
