BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Jacksonville intercepted four Campbell passes on the day and defeated Campbell 20-14 Saturday at Barker-Lane Stadium.
Running back De'Shawn Jones set the Campbell Division I era career rushing record. The junior from Greensboro rushed 23 times Saturday for 82 yards to extend his season record to 1079 yards. He has 1991 career yards on the ground to break the old record of 1918 set by Carl Smith (2008-11).
Jones scored twice, including a three-yard run with 19 seconds left to cut the margin to six points. However, Nick Duke recovered the on-side kick to seal the win in Campbell's season finale.
Andrew Hooks picked off two Kameron Bryant passes, including a third-quarter pick-six that provided JU with a 17-0 lead in the third quarter. Brandon Roe and Andrew Hooks also had interceptions for Jacksonville, which converted each of CU's turnovers into points.
Campbell (5-6, 3-5 PFL) out-gained Jacksonville 311-230, but the Dolphins converted four Camel turnovers into 20 points. Campbell's five Pioneer Football League losses came by a total of 18 points.
The Camels sacked JU quarterback Rylan Wells six times on the day to extend their school-record total to 38 for the year.
Wells completed 11-of-20 passes for 115 yards for Jacksonville (8-2, 5-2), which closes its schedule next week at home vs. Valparaiso. Ulysses Bryant ran 17 times for 85 yards and a score and had three receptions for 32 yards.
Bryant finished the day 10-of-24 for 155 yards for Campbell. Austin Fleming led CU with three receptions for 59 yards and added 14 yards on the ground.
Ugonna Awuruonye and Brandon Mobley led Campbell with seven tackles. Malik Slater had 17 stops, Grady Redding 16 and Hooks 13 for the Dolphins.
Jacksonville drove 66 yards on eight plays to score on its first possession. Wells' 25-yard scramble on third and long kept the drive alive and Bryant capped the march with a four-yard run.
Brandon Behr's 32-yard field goal ended a nine-play, 63-yard drive to give JU at 10-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. He tacked on a 38-yarder with 1:15 left in the fourth.
Campbell out-gained the Dolphins 141-134 in the opening period, but a pair of Dolphin interceptions ended two Campbell scoring threats.
Jones' 18-yard run in the first quarter pushed him over 1,000 yards for the season and also pushed him past Smith's school rushing mark.
Hooks intercepted a tipped pass and ran in from 26 yards out to give Jacksonville a 17-0 lead with 12:03 left in the third.
Jones' two-yard run capped a 12-play, 65-yard drive and cut the JU lead to 17-7 with 11:08 remaining in the fourth period. Campbell trimmed the final margin to 20-14 on a 7-play, 69-yard drive that consumed only 50 seconds.
