GREENVILLE, N.C. – Highlighted by a go-ahead grand slam from Cole Hallum in a six-run sixth, Campbell defeated East Carolina 9-4 on the road Tuesday at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Trailing the Pirates (9-6) 3-1 heading into the sixth inning, Campbell (14-2) mounted a one-out rally, starting with a double from Cedric Mullins. After Steven Leonard was hit by pitch and Anthony Lopez and Kyle Leady reached on infield hits, the second scoring Mullins, the Camels loaded the bases.
A RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Seth LaRue tied the game, allowing Leonard to score. An error on the play kept the bases loaded for Hallum, who drilled his first pitch over the wall in left-center for a grand slam, putting the visiting Camels up 7-3.
The big inning came after the Pirates had the bases loaded and none out in the bottom of the fifth. Coley Thompkins entered the game with two on and no outs, and surrendered a bunt single to fill the bases full of Pirates.
Travis Watkins then lined out to short and Lopez doubled off Luke Lowery at second, and a groundout ended the inning, with Thompkins guiding CU out of the jam unscathed.
Campbell added runs in the seventh and eighth on a Kyle Leady RBI single and a Cedric Mullins sacrifice fly.
Lowery homered for the Pirates in the bottom of the seventh, giving the game its 9-4 final.
Thompkins (3-0) pitched four innings in the relief win, allowing four hits with one run. Bobby Thorson worked the ninth, allowing just a two out hit.
CU starter Grant Yost worked four innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on 11 hits. Campbell hurlers did not strike out or walk a batter in the win.
Jimmy Boyd (1-3) was charged with the loss for the Pirates, allowing six runs, seven earned, on eight hits with two strikeouts in his second start of the year.
Four Pirates combined for two runs on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks in the final three stanzas.
Brian Taylor went 3-for-4, while Mullins notched a 2-for-4 night, extending his hitting streak to nine games while adding two runs scored and a RBI.
Lowery paced ECU, going 3-for-5 with a homer.
Campbell returns home this weekend, opening Big South play with Longwood on March 13 at 6 p.m.
