Camels come back to top Duke 9-6

DURHAM, N.C. – Campbell stormed back with a four-run seventh and topped Duke 9-6 on the road Tuesday night at Jack Coombs Field.

The Camels improved to 21-8 on the season with the win, while Duke dropped to 19-10 overall. Campbell has taken five of the last six meetings against the Blue Devils.

Duke led 5-0 after two innings and Peter Zyla's three-run triple.

Campbell scratched across single runs in the third, fourth and sixth before a four-run seventh to take a 7-6 lead over the Blue Devils. The Camels added a pair in the eighth for the 9-6 road win.

Sophomore lefty Andrew Witczak (1-0) tossed two innings in a relief win for the Camels, facing the minimum and striking out his final two batters.

Bobby Thorson tossed three innings, surrendering a run on two hits with four strikeouts, while Coley Thompkins pitched a scoreless eighth with a strikeout. Cole Hallum earned his sixth save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

Campbell starter Travis Long allowed five runs, four earned, on four hits with two strikeouts and walks.

Duke's Ryan Day (1-1) took the loss, allowing the go-ahead run on three hits.

Jame Ziemba allowed three runs on a hit with two walks and a strikeout, while Kevin Lewallyn surrendered two runs on two hits. Duke starter Dillon Haviland worked two innings, allowing a hit.

Anthony Lopez paced the Campbell comeback, tying the game with a two-run single in the seventh after his RBI groundout cut the Duke lead to three in the sixth. Lopez was 2-for-5 on the night with three RBI.

Brian Taylor also knocked in a pair, going 2-for-4, including the go-ahead tally in the top of the seventh, and a RBI single in the fourth.

Steven Leonard's RBI groundout plated Campbell's first run in its seventh inning rally. The redshirt junior catcher went 2-for-6 in the win. Seth LaRue and Matt Parrish also knocked in runs for the Camels, while Cedric Mullins, Cole Hallum and Parrish scored twice.

Zyla was 2-for-5 with three RBI for the Blue Devils.

The Camels get back to Big South play at Presbyterian April 2-4. The series begins on Thursday at 3 p.m., with another 3 p.m. start Friday, and a 2 p.m. finale on Saturday. CU returns home on Tuesday, April 7 against East Carolina.
