BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell held visiting Chowan to eight net rushing yards and registered six sacks in a 35-3 victory over the Hawks Saturday night at Barker-Lane Stadium.
Kameron Bryant and David Salmon each tossed a pair of touchdown passes, De'Shawn Jones ran for 97 yards and the Camels outgained the Division II Hawks 450-135.
Campbell held the ball for 36:41 and improved to 2-0 for the first time since it restarted its program in 2008. Chowan dropped to 1-1.
The defense limited Chowan to only two trips to the red zone. Campbell allowed only a fourth-quarter field goal by Nick Hahula and allowed the fewest points in a game since a 10-0 victory over UVA-Wise on Sept. 8, 2012.
Bryant completed 17-of-25 passes for 196 yards. Salmon completed all three of his throws for 46 yards. A graduate transfer from Appalachian State, Bryant added 55 yards on the ground on nine rushes. Trey Sanders made five catches for 47 yards, while Andre Davis and Ben Bolling hauled in three receptions apiece.
Carlos Merritt and Jack Ryan led the Camels with six tackles each. Six different Camels figured in six sacks of Chowan quarterback Randall Dixon.
Dixon finished the night 11-of-22 for 127 yards in the air, but was sacked for losses of 66 yards. Tyree Lee ran 15 times for 46 yards. Roderick Lindsey led Chowan with nine tackles.
Campbell took the opening kickoff and drove 69 yards on eight plays in 3:44 to take the lead. Bryant's 18-yard pass to Bolling in the right corner of the end zone provided the Camels with a 7-0 lead.
The grab was Bolling's eighth career scoring catch to tie the school Division I era (since 2008) career record set by Harrison Jordan (2008-11).
Bryant hooked up with Aaron Blockmon on a 17-yard scoring pass and Jarrett Ozimek's PAT pushed the Camel lead to 14-0 with 0:32 remaining in the opening quarter.Â
Reserve quarterback Salmon hit Ricky Brown on an eight-yard TD on a fade pattern and the Camels went ahead 21-0 with 12:18 to play in the second. Andrew Davis' 26-yard punt return set up the Camels with a first down at the Chowan 25.
De'Shawn Jones' 19-yard run set up the Camels with a first down at the Chowan 19. Salmon then hit Damon Simmons on a slant pattern for Campbell's fourth TD pass of the half with 5:22 to play.
Chowan reached the red zone for the first time on the opening drive of the third quarter. Dixon's 21-yard pass to Damian Ellis gave the Hawks a first-down on the Camel seven. One play later, Jake Barr sacked Dixon for a 12-yard loss and Hahula's 34-yard field goal attempt was wide left.
Hahula got the Hawks on the board with a 27-yard field goal with 13:52 remaining in the contest.Â
Angelo Crawford-Reid scored on a 21-yard end around to cap a 10-play, 82-yard drive with 19 seconds remaining in the contest.
The Camels hit the road next week for a 7:00 p.m. start on Sat., Sept. 19 at Presbyterian.
Head Coach Mike Minter
"We executed really well," said Minter. "The first half was kind of flawless. Our defense did a great job keeping them out of the end zone and the offense went 4-for-5 when in the red zone. These are the type of things that you really look for in a football team. The special teams also did really well and almost returned a punt for a touchdown. We were just really clicking in the first half. Second half, the game just got ugly. What I liked about our guys was they were able to stay the course. They did not get too high or get too low and we were able to punch in that last touchdown. I am very excited about the way we are playing as a football team."
