Wrestling knocks off West Virginia and Ohio to open 2016-17 season

MORGANTOWN, W.Va - Campbell wrestling picked up a pair of big victories during the Mountaineer Duals, Sunday inside the WVU Coliseum.

The Camels opened up the day with a 29-17 victory against the hosts, West Virginia. The victory against WVU is the first win against a Big 12 program in school history.

The day continued as Campbell took down no. 33 Ohio by a score of 20-12. CU fell in the third match, a 21-13 scoreline against Pittsburgh.

Nathan Kraisser was one of three Camels to go 3-0 on the day, leading the way with 14 points and one pin. Ville Heino also went 3-0, gathering 13 points on the day, with one pin. Jere Heino also posted a 3-0 record on the day, garnering 11 points during his three contests.

Campbell returns to the match next Sunday, Nov. 13 in Washington D.C., as it will take on Clarion at 9 a.m. and American at 11 a.m.

Campbell 29, West Virginia 17

Against West Virginia, Kraisser got the day started with a pin over Devin Brown at the 2:43 mark of the first period, putting the Camels ahead 6-0. WVU earned a pair of falls and a decision victory in the next three weight classes to jump out to a 15-6 lead. At 157, Austin Kraisser earned his first collegiate victory with a pin at 4:07 over Dayton Garrett. WVU took a 5-2 decision victory at 165, as it led 18-12.

The Camels won the final four matches of the contest, en route to the 29-17 victory. Alex Herringshaw and V. Heino won their matches by decision, at 174-pounds and 184-pounds respectively.

With a two-point lead, Willie Bivens won by disqualification over Jacob Smith at the 197-pound contest. Smith was leading the match in the third period, but he was called for a flagrant misconduct, which earned six points for Campbell and a one-point deduction for West Virginia. J. Heino capped off the win with a 21-6 tech fall against Bryson Begley at the 285 weight class.

Campbell 23, Ohio 15

The second matchup of the day, saw Campbell knock off no. 33 Ohio, 23-15. The Camels received a pair of pinfalls and a tech fall en route to the victory.

N. Kraisser started off with a 22-5 tech fall against Hayden Lee at the 125-pound matchup. Jonathan Ryan added a pinfall victory at 4:49 against no. 13 ranked Cameron Kelly, to put Campbell ahead 11-0.

Ohio won four of the next five matchups over Campbell. Luke Stewart was the lone Camel during the stretch to pick up a victory, a 2-0 decision against Cullen Cummings at 149-pounds.

V. Heino gave Campbell a 20-12 advantage after his pinfall over Hunter Yeargan at the 3:50 mark in the 184-pound matchup. Ohio claimed three points in the 197 matchup to pull within five, but Jere Heino took a 6-2 decision at the 285-pound match to earn three-points for the Camels.

Pittsburgh 21, Campbell 13

In Sunday's final match, Campbell fell 21-13 to no. 23 Pittsburgh, as the Panthers picked up three major decisions in the win.

N. Kraisser capped off his day with a 5-4 decision Lorenzo Bentley at the 125-pound matchup. Dom Forys earned a major decision at 133 and Nick Zanetta claimed a 6-4 decision at the 141-pound match.

Campbell closed within one point as Stewart earned a 10-4 decision at 149-pounds against Mike Racciato. Pittsburgh claimed the next three matchups as Jake Wentzel won a 10-6 decision at 157, Te'Shan Campbell won an 8-3 decision at 165, and Christian Dietrich won a 16-5 major decision at 174.

V. Heino claimed a four-point major decision win at 184, as he defeated Matt Carr 15-5. Zach Bruce won by major decision for Pittsburgh at 197, which pushed the lead to 21-10. J. Heino closed the day with a 9-6 decision at the 285-pound match.
