BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell rolled to a 59-7 win over Bluefield College in the Fighting Camels' season opener Saturday at Barker-Lane Stadium.
De'Shawn Jones ran for 142 yards, Jared Joyner 104 and Elijah Burress 90 as the Camels piled up 416 rushing yards. A red-shirt freshman quarterback, Burress completed 11-of-13 passes for 163 yards and one touchdown. Aaron Blockmon hauled in four passes for 95 yards and one score.
After thunderstorms forced Thursday's opener to be postponed two days, Campbell finished with a 579-139 edge in total offense and led 59-0 before the NAIA Rams scored.
The Camels led 42-0 at halftime and outgained the Rams 345-27 at the break. The 2015 Pioneer Football League rushing leader, Jones ran for 122 yards and three scores in the opening half alone. Saturday's output marked his sixth career 100-yard rushing performance.
Campbell went ahead only 2:42 into the game when Trey Sanders returned a punt 55 yards for the opening score. The return was the longest in Campbell's Division I history (since 2008) and also a Barker-Lane Stadium record.
Burress ran in from five yards on a quarterback keeper and Mitchell Brown's point after capped a nine-play, 62 yard drive to put the Camels in front 14-0 with 5:36 to go in the opening quarter.
Jones' 10-yard rush ended a 9-play, 88-yard march and pushed the edge to 21-0 on the first play of the second period. Just over three minutes later, Jones burst off left tackle, broke to the sideline and scampered 74 yards down the sideline for his second score.
After Bluefield quarterback Ashten Dixon fumbled a shotgun snap, Syd Holt recovered at the Rams 21. Jones then ran in from a yard out and the margin was 35-0 with 5:43 to go in the half.
Burress then hit Aaron Blockmon on a post pattern for a 46-yard TD catch and run with 2:11 to go in the second quarter.
Joyner ended a 10-play drive with a one-yard dive to give the Camels a 49-0 edge with 8:34 left in the third. Brown's 30-yard field goal pushed the margin to 52-0 after three quarters.
The Camel lead reached 59-0 with 6:33 to play when Darius Barnes ran in from 27 yards and back-up kicker Colin Gary added the PAT.
Bluefield avoided the shutout when Alex Martin's 7-yard scoring run ended a 51-yard drive with 4:39 left in the game.
Martin led the Rams (0-2) with 41 yards on the ground on 13 carries. Dixon completed 5-of-10 passes for 18 yards and one interception.
Ray Miller led Campbell with 11 tackles, while Jack Ryan added nine. Danta Covington had 11 stops for Bluefield with Shaun Kolb and Tracey Parker chipping in nine apiece.
