Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Camels blank Charleston Southern, 5-0

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Four different Camels netted goals to help lead the Campbell University (8-5-1, 4-1-1) women's soccer team over Charleston Southern (4-8-2, 2-3-1), 5-0, on Wednesday evening at the Eakes Athletics Complex.

With this victory, CU returned to the win column after going 0-1-1 in last week's two-game road trip at Longwood and Liberty.

"I thought we were clinical in front of goal," said head coach Samar Azem. "The last two games we've had our confidence knocked in front of goal, and it was good to get that back against a very good team."

Alexa Genas' two-goal performance moves her to 15 goals on the season, which is ranked second in the NCAA only behind Wofford's Haley Younginer (19 goals). In addition, she is ranked second in total points (34), goals per game (1.07) and points per game (2.43).

Erin Scott had a fantastic game between the posts, facing 13 shots and recording eight key saves. The Sachse, Texas, native punched two Charleston Southern shots above the crossbar over the course of the match to help preserve the clean sheet.

"For a majority of the first half, I thought they outplayed us. Erin did a great job to keep us in the game. She had two tips over the crossbar that were fantastic," said Azem.

Taylor Koester got the scoring underway in the 13th minute of play, as the defender crossed the ball from the end line past the goalkeeper and into the goal. The ball was intended as a cross, but Koester managed to put it in the back of the net for her first career goal.

Just 20 seconds later, Genas extended the Fighting Camels' lead to 2-0. Genas blocked the CSU goalkeeper's attempted clear, and it went straight into the back of the net for her 14th goal of the season.

In the 42nd minute of play, Genas registered her second goal of the game after eluding a defender, squaring up from 15 yards out and putting it past the outstretched arms of CSU goalkeeper Alyssa Dellacqua. The Albuquerque, N.M., native's 15th goal of 2017 gave CU a commanding 3-0 lead heading into the halftime break.

Charleston Southern was the stronger side out of the gate, as the Buccaneers registered three shots during the first 13 minutes of play. However, the Camel defense held strong to keep CSU off of the board.

The Orange and Black responded in the 62nd minute, as Sydney Towns fired away a powerful shot from 20 yards out. The shot deflected off the crossbar and Haley Thoma collected the rebound, but her shot was saved by Dellacqua.

Shannon Wratchford gave the Camels the 4-0 lead in the 68th minute after receiving the ball from Siara Southerland, shedding a CSU defender and shooting into the far corner of the goal.

In the 75th minute, Abby Major fired away a shot that hit the left crossbar, but Morgan Garris was there to collect the rebound and put it in the back of the net. Garris' first career goal was the second scored by a defender on the day, following Koester's earlier in the game.

Campbell registered 20 shots over the course of the game to Charleston Southern's 14. CU also held the advantage in shots on frame (8-7) and corner kicks (6-3). Scott corralled a season-high eight saves to Dellacqua's two.

Up next, the Camels will host Gardner-Webb on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Eakes Athletics Complex for Senior Day in the Creek. For the latest information about Campbell women's soccer, make sure to follow @GoCamelsWSOC on Twitter.
