UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. – Tony Carr scored a career-high 33 points and Penn State held off Campbell 86-75 Friday in the season opener for both teams at the Bryce Jordan Center.
Chris Clemons – the nation's top returning scorer – set an arena record with 39 points to lead Campbell (0-1), which trailed by 17 points midway through the second half, but cut the gap to 75-70 with 58 seconds to play.
Pennsylvania native
Andrew Eudy added 11 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks for Campbell, while
Damontez Oliver came off the bench to chip in nine points on 3-of-5 beyond the arc.
Clemons, the Big South Conference preseason player of the year, hit double digits for the 52nd-straight game, the longest active stretch among league players, and finished with his school-record 10th 30-plus point effort of his career. A junior guard, Clemons added seven rebounds and a team-high four assists while hitting 13-of-15 free throws.
Carr, who was named to the Big Ten all-freshman team a year ago, knocked down 13-of-15 from the line, pulled down nine boards and dealt seven assists in 35 minutes.
After Clemons' steal and drive to the bucket with a minute left in the game, Carr answered with an old-fashioned 3-point play to give the Nittany Lions (1-0) an eight –point edge. The 6-foot-5 sophomore scored 11 points in the final 1:42.
Penn State led 61-44 on Shep Garner's foul shots with 9:13 to go. However,
Mogga Lado's jam with 6:22 left capped an 11-0 run and brought Campbell within 61-55. PSU again stretched the margin to double figures and held a 73-59 lead with 3:07 remaining before Campbell answered with an 11-2 burst.
Campbell shot 40 percent (25-62) from the floor, made 6-of-23 (.261) from 3-point range, and hit 19-of-23 (.826) from the line.
Penn State finished 24-of-65 (.369) from the field, hit 5-of-19 triples (.263) and made 10 more free throws (33-of-41) than the Camels attempted. The Nittany Lions finished with a 44-37 edge on the boards and a 14-6 margin in second-chance points.
Clemons' pullup three from the right wing drew the Camels even at 20 with 6:51 left in the opening half. However, with Eudy, Whitfield and Oliver saddled with two fouls each, Penn State led 36-28 at the break.
Campbell shot 35 percent (11-31) from the floor in the opening half, made 2-of-10 threes, and 4-of-5 from the line. Penn State made just 31 percent (11-35) of its first-half shots, including 3-of-14 beyond the arc, but canned 11-of-14 from the stripe.
Clemons finished with 15 first-half points on 6-of-15 shooting, while Eudy had 9 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks before the break. Carr led Penn State with 9 first-half points to go along with 7 boards and 4 assists.
Campbell opens its home schedule Monday with a 7:00 p.m. tip-off against Columbia International at Gore Arena.
