Camels and Cougars square off on Wednesday

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After back-to-back home wins last weekend, Campbell returns to non-conference action on the road at College of Charleston on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

Last time out
Campbell won both games at home last weekend, defeating William Peace, 94-52, and USC Upstate, 69-49.
 
Caroline Bowns and Summer Price scored in double figures to lead Campbell to a 69-49 victory over USC Upstate on Sunday afternoon inside Gore Arena. Bowns knocked down 4-of-7 from 3-point range and Price added a pair of buckets from beyond the arc for Campbell, which led for more than 37 minutes on Sunday.
 
Taya Bolden gathered a game-high 11 rebounds, her second consecutive game with double-digit boards. MaKala Rouse grabbed six rebounds, three each way, and dished out a game-high five assists for the Camels over the Spartans.
 
College of Charleston notes
College of Charleston enters Wednesday night's contest on a three-game losing streak after a 107-43 loss at Michigan State on Sunday, Nov. 19. CofC also fell at Central Michigan on Friday afternoon, 79-58.
 
The Cougars opened with a 85-69 victory at home against Lipscomb, followed by a 72-58 loss at Furman, which started the three-game slump.
 
Charleston has three scorers averaging double figures through the first four games of the season. Tanisha Brown leads the way with 12.8 points per game, followed by Darien Huff (12.5 ppg) and Shiclasia Brown (11.8 ppg). The trio is also top-3 in assists per game and rebounds per game.
 
These two sides last met in the Trans-Atlantic Athletic Conference (TAAC) days on February 21, 1998, a 63-47 victory for the Camels.
 
Strong Offensive Starts At Home
The Camels have outscored opponents by an average of 45 points in the last six home openers (5-1). The largest margin of victory in the last five home-openers was 69 points (102-33) against Barber-Scotia (11/10/12). Most recently, Campbell won by 52 over William Peace last Friday night.
 
Loss In Season-Opener
In 2015-16, Campbell's last season-opening loss, CU bounced back by winning five of its next six contests. Campbell is currently 2-0 after its season-opening loss at Kansas on Nov. 12.
 
Freshmen Impact
Through the first three games, all six freshmen have appeared for the Camels. Five recorded at least 10 minutes of game time at Kansas, led by Tatyana Carver's 22 minutes.
 
Against William Peace, Julia Crocker made her collegiate debut, knocking down a 3-pointer on her first shot of the game. On Sunday, Lauren McNamara-Clement played 23 minutes and Kyra Davis started and saw 22 minutes of action.
 
Big South Weekly Awards
McNamara-Clement picked up the first weekly award of the season for the Orange and Black, earning Freshman of the Week honors on Monday, Nov. 20.
 
She poured in 21 points on 69.2 percent shooting and snagged nine rebounds during the two games to earn the weekly honor.  
 
Let Me Help
Campbell tallied 31 assists on Friday night on 37 baskets, with MaKala Rouse and Carver combining for 13 to lead the way. CU continued with 14 assists on 23 made baskets on Sunday versus USC Upstate, led by Rouse's five. The Camels have combined to assist on 45 of the last 60 shots, a 75-percent mark.
 
1,000-Point Watch
Senior guard Summer Price is nearing the 1,000-point plateau, only needing 40 points to reach that mark. Price tallied 416 points last season, 45 percent of her three-year career total.
 
Big South Preseason
The Camels were tabbed third in the Big South preseason poll, earning 77 points in the voting. Campbell finished four points ahead of fourth place High Point, and four points behind second place Liberty. Summer Price and MaKala Rouse were named to the preseason second team all-conference.
 
2017-18 Camels
CU returns nine from last season, including its top four scorers, while adding six new faces to the squad. Price, Rouse, Caroline Bowns and Hannah Long pace the top four returning scorers for the Camels.
 
Hayley Barber, Breanna Foster, Taya Bolden, Sarah Smith and Alyshia Allison also return for the Orange and Black. Joining the squad is Micaila Coleman, Ashlyn Hampton, Tatyana Carver, Kyra Davis and Julia Crocker.
 
Campbell signs two for 2018
Head coach Ronny Fisher announced the signing of Shyanne "Shy" Tuelle and Lauren Carter to the 2018 incoming class.
 
Tuelle, a 5-10 guard, comes to Campbell from Hampton, Tenn., and Hampton High School. Carter, a 6-0 forward, joins the Camels from High Point, N.C., and Southwest Guilford High School.
 
Postseason Play
Campbell made its first postseason appearance in 17 years in 2017, as it earned a spot in the Women's Basketball Invitational. CU fell to St. Francis (Pa.), 79-68, on March 16 in tournament play.
 
Top Scoring Defense
Campbell finished the 2016-17 season with the top scoring defense in NCAA Division I, allowing just 49.6 points per game. The Camels held teams to just 47.8 points per game inside Gore Arena. CU tallied nine double-digit victories, holding opponents to under 40 points in five of those contests.
 
Big South 2016-17 Honors
MaKala Rouse was named the 2016-17 Big South Defensive Player of the Year. Rouse also earned honorable mention all-conference honors. Summer Price earned second team honors and former Camel, Brianna Cribb, picked up all-academic honors.
