Hot-shooting Camels roll by USC Upstate 93-74

Camels shoot 70.8 percent in 2nd half; tie school record with 16 threes

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell shot 71 percent in the second half and rolled to a 93-74 win over USC Upstate Sunday in the finale of the Creek Classic at Gore Arena.

Marcus Burk scored 26 points, Chris Clemons and Cory Gensler 19 apiece, Shane Whitfield 12 and Andrew Eudy 11 for the Camels (3-4), who tied a school record by knocking down 16 three-point shots in 26 attempts (.615).

Trailing by three at the break, Campbell made its first 10 shots of the second half – including 5 three-pointers. A 15-3 burst capped by Burk's triple extended the lead to 69-56 and Upstate only once cut the margin to single digits the rest of the way.

CU shot 62.5 percent (30-48) on the night and assisted on 28 of 30 made field goals. Clemons (8) and Eudy (7) both hit career-high assist totals.

Burk knocked down 8-of-11 threes and earned a place on the all-tournament team. A sophomore guard from Indianapolis, Burk is averaging 26 points over the last five games.

Gensler set a personal career high scoring total after making 6-of-7 shots, including 5-of-6 beyond the arc. After missing two of the last three games due to injury, Clemons came off the bench to score 19 points and make three steals in 30 minutes.

Whitfield, who had a season-high 28 on Saturday against Bowling Green, scored in double digits for the third-straight contest, while also dealing a career-high five assists. Eudy complimented his 7 assists with a season-high tying 11 points to go along with five rebounds and 2 blocks.

"This team has great potential," said Campbell head coach Kevin McGeehan.  "Our team is improving and we just have to focus every day on getting better, keep being the right kind of guys, great teammates, and concentrate on going down to Stetson Thursday and playing to win.  Short of a couple of minute stretches of basketball, this would have been a realty good weekend."

Deion Holmes came off the Upstate bench to score 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Malik Moore added 16, while Isaiah Anderson had 12 for the Spartans (3-5), who shot 49 percent for the game (30-61) and made 9-of-20 threes.

Campbell finished with a 28-27 edge on the boards and made 11 more free throws (17-23) than Upstate attempted (5-6).

Upstate rode a 14-2 run midway through the opening half and led 46-43 at the break after making 20-of-31 shots (.645).  The Spartans, however, hit just 10-of-30 from the field in the decisive second period.

Campbell returns to action Thursday in a 7:00 p.m. start at Stetson.
