Camels defeat Stetson 85-78

Burk and Whitfield score 20 each for hot-shooting Camels

DeLAND, FLA. – Shane Whitfield and Marcus Burk scored 20 points each to lead Campbell to an 85-78 win over Stetson Thursday night at the Edmunds Center.
 
Chris Clemons added 15 points, Cory Gensler 12 and Andrew Eudy 9, plus 12 rebounds and 6 assists for the Camels (4-4), who shot 60 percent in the second half.
 
Divine Myles led Stetson (5-4) with 27 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Angel Rivera added 13 points and B.J. Glasford 12 for the Hatters, who clawed back from a 16-point deficit in the first half to tie the game, but could not complete the comeback.
 
Campbell led 41-31 at halftime, but Stetson wrapped a 22-10 run around the break and cut the margin to 45-41 on Myles' 3-point play with 16:30 to play.
 
Rivera's spinning reverse layup tied the game at 60 with 8:25 remaining, but Campbell answered with a 14-0 run, hitting all 7 of its shots in the process.
 
Whitfield scored off Eudy's backdoor feed to start the decisive push.  Burk hit a layup and Gensler on a fast-break bucket. After Whitfield hit the first of two free throws for a 67-60 edge with 6:35 to go, Gensler knocked down a right corner three, Jordan Whitfield hit a wing jumper before his older brother finished the rally with a fast-break layup through contact for a 74-60 margin with 4:13 to play.
 
The Camels made 7-of-8 from the line in the last 57.7 seconds, with Clemons (twice) and Shane Whitfield hitting the front end of 3-straight 1-and-1 chances to hold off the hosts.
 
Campbell finished the night shooting 52.7 percent (29-55) from the floor, 60 percent (15-25) in the second half. CU knocked down 9-of-14 threes (.643) and made 18-of-24 from the line, while finishing with a 41-30 edge on the boards.
 
The Hatters committed just six turnovers and finished with a 21-7 edge in points off miscues, but made just 43 percent (30-70) of the shots, 9-of-28 (.321) from three-point distance, and just 9-of-15 from the stripe (.600).
 
The Camels went on a 17-2 run and took a 35-19 lead on Cory Gensler's corner three with 6:51 left in the first half.  CU held Stetson to just two points over a 9:16 span before the Hatters trimmed the lead to 41-31 at the break.
 
Burk scored 14 first-half points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 3-of-4 threes.  The Camels held a 25-11 advantage on the boards in the opening stanza.  Myles (11) and Glassford (7) combined for 18 of Stetson's 31 first-half points.
 
The victory was Campbell's seventh in a row against its former A-Sun rival, including last year's 81-72 triumph at Buies Creek.
 
Clemons moved into ninth place on Campbell's all-time scoring list with 1593 points, passing Cordell Wise (1584) and Andrew Broadie (1589) Thursday night.
 
CU entered the game ranked 14th in the country in field goal percentage (.524) and shot better than 50 percent for the fourth time in eight outings.
 
Campbell returns to action Monday in a 7:00 p.m. start at East Carolina.
