East Carolina rallies for 69-66 win over Campbell

Burk scores 21 for short-handed Camels

GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina closed the game on a 13-2 run to defeat Campbell 69-66 Monday night at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.

Isaac Fleming scored 19 points, B.J. Tyson 16 and Kentrell Barkley 14 for the Pirates (5-4), who won their third-straight game.

Playing without the Big South's leading scorer Chris Clemons (22.2), who missed his third game due to injury, Campbell wrapped a 21-4 run around halftime and led 51-34 after Shane Whitfield's fast break layup with 15:09 to play.

The Pirates whittled the lead to 64-60 before Marcus Burk scored on a backdoor layup to put the Camels in front 66-60 with 2:50 remaining. However the Camels missed their final five shots against the American Athletic Conference members.

Burk led Campbell (4-5) with 21 points, while Shane Whitfield had 12 and Cory Gensler 10, plus career highs of 11 rebounds and six steals.

ECU finished the night shooting 51 percent from the floor (24-47), hit 4-of-13 threes (.308) and 17-of-31 (.548) from the line.  Campbell entered the contest ranked eighth in the country in team field goal percentage (.524), but made a season-low 38.8 percent of their shots (26-67), 7-of-26 (.269) from 3-point distance, and 7-of-10 from the line.

Campbell closed the opening period on a 12-0 run to take a 42-30 lead at the break.  After B.J. Tyson hit a three to tie the score at 30 with 4:12 to play, ECU went 0-of-1 with four turnovers the rest of the first half.

Burk's back-door cut put the Camels ahead 32-30 with 3:48 to go; then Gensler hit a second-chance three after Whitfield missed a front end of a one-and-one for a 35-30 edge with 3:32 to go. Burk and Whitfield scored underneath before Oliver's deep left wing three pushed the margin to 12.

ECU shot 48 percent (12-25) from the floor in the opening half, but hit just three of eight from the line and missed all three front ends of one-and-ones.  The Pirates committed 12 first-half turnovers that led to 11 Campbell points.

Despite facing a front court that included a pair of players standing 6-foot-8 and taller, the Camels had a 10-2 edge in second-chance points in the first period.  Campbell shot 47 percent (16-34), but canned 6-13 threes and 4-6 from the line.  Burk scored 14 first-half points on 5-of-9 shooting to go along with three assists and three steals.

The Camels break for final exams until hosting The Citadel on Dec. 14 at 7:00 p.m.
