Mercer slips by Campbell 58-57 Thursday

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Mercer scored twice in the final 14 seconds to come away with a 58-57 victory over Campbell on Thursday evening inside Gore Arena.

The Bears closed the contest on a 6-0 run and connected on six of their last eight shots to come away with the one-point win.

Campbell (4-2) held a three-point lead, 57-54 with 1:02 left in the contest. A missed jumper allowed Mercer (5-2) to get possession with 29.1 seconds remaining and a chance to tie the game.

Out of a timeout, the Bears cut the lead to one on Alex Williams' layup with 14 seconds left. A Campbell turnover off the inbound's pass gave the Bears possession with 12 seconds to play.

Sydni Means collected a pass from Kahlia Lawrence and hit an open jumper from just outside the free throw line to give Mercer the one-point lead. With no timeouts, Campbell's shot in the final seconds fell short of the mark.

Summer Price led the Camels with 22 points and Taya Bolden posted her second consecutive double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Tonight's performance was Bolden's fifth consecutive game with 10 or more rebounds.

Lawrence led all scorers with 28 points on 11-of-27 shooting (40.7 percent) for the Bears. Rachel Selph also scored in double figures, knocking down 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting.

The Camels used three straight 3-pointers from Price and Caroline Bowns to cap off a 13-2 run and reach their largest advantage of the contest, 48-37, with 32 seconds left in the third quarter.

The visitors forced 11 second half turnovers and held Campbell to 6-of-28 shooting in the second half, including 1-of-15 in the fourth quarter to pull out the victory.

Campbell's 3-point defense stymied Mercer, not allowing a single bucket from downtown, while CU connected on six shots from long range (6-of-20).

CU won the rebounding battle for the fifth consecutive game, out-rebounding Mercer, 42-34, including 30-22 in defensive boards.

The Bears jumped out to their largest lead of the game in the opening 2:40 of the first quarter, 6-2, after a pair of baskets from Lawrence. The Camels responded with a 7-2 run to take a 9-8 lead halfway through the opening frame.

Bolden snagged six rebounds in the first half to lead all players, while Price poured in 11 first half points for Campbell, which led by as many as 10 in the opening half.

Campbell led for more than 30 minutes on Thursday and has led for 182:59 in the last five games combined. In that same span, CU has only trailed for 6:44, after trailing for just 4:14 against Mercer.

Campbell returns home on Monday at 7 p.m. against in-state opponent, Western Carolina.
