Camels defeat The Citadel 87-77

Clemons scores 32 as CU wins its 3rd in the last 4 games

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Chris Clemons scored 32 points and Campbell defeated The Citadel 87-77 Thursday night at Gore Arena.

Cory Gensler added 16 points and 8 rebounds, Andrew Eudy 11 points and 12 boards for the Camels (5-5), who led by as many as 27 before holding off a late Bulldog rally.

Marcus Burk, who entered the game as the Big South Conference's leading scorer (19.6 ppg), was held 11 below his average with 8 points, but dealt a career-high seven assists.

Matt Frierson came off the bench to lead The Citadel (4-6) with 22 points. Kaelon Harris added 18 and Tariq Simmons 16 for the Bulldogs, who shot 39 percent floor.

Campbell wrapped a 35-8 run around halftime and led 59-32 when Clemons made his fourth 3-pointer of the second half with 14:30 to play.

However, the Bulldogs answered with a 26-6 burst and cut the gap to 65-58 with 5:21 left when Harris converted a 3-point play.  Gensler responded with a drive to the bucket, Clemons hit a floater in the lane, Whitfield hit a free throw and Clemons dunked in transition to push the gap back to double digits (72-60) with 3:19 remaining.

Campbell made 8-of-10 from the line in the last 1:59 to seal its third victory in the last four outings.

After missing three of the last six games due to injury, Clemons scored 22 points in the second half alone on 8-of-11 shooting, including 4-of-5 threes, and registered his 11th career 30-plus point outing. On the night, the junior guard hit 12-of-21 shots, 5-of-8 triples.

Against a Citadel squad that entered the game third in the nation in forced turnovers (21.7), the Camels committed just nine miscues.  CU finished with a 51-36 edge on the glass, 16-9 in second-chance points, and 18-6 in transition.

Campbell returns to action Tuesday in a 7:30 p.m. (CST) tip-off at Atlantic-10 member Saint Louis.
