ST. LOUIS, MO. – A strong start to the second half lifted Saint Louis to a 74-66 win over Campbell Tuesday night at Chaifetz Arena.
Aaron Hines came off the bench to score 18 points for the Billikens, who trailed 38-30 at the break, but opened the second period on an 18-3 run.
Jalen Johnson added 17 points, Jordan Goodwin 16 and Hasahn French 11, plus 12 rebounds for the Billikens (6-6), who made 10 more free throws (29-42) than the Camels attempted (15-19).
Chris Clemons (28) and
Marcus Burk (20) combined for 48 points, but Campbell made just one of its first eight shots and made seven turnovers in the first 7:00 of the final stanza.
SLU led 59-48 with 5:31 to play before the Camels cut the margin to just four (60-56) with 3:34 remaining after Clemons made a pair from the line. However, SLU made 8-of-10 foul shots in the final 1:10 to seal the victory.
Saint Louis shot 43.5 percent (20-46) on the night, made 5-of-13 (.385) from 3-point range and 69 percent (29-42) from the stripe, while finishing with a 40-28 advantage on the glass.
Campbell shots 39.6 percent (21-53) on the game, made 9-of-22 threes (.409) and 78.9 percent (15-19) from the line.
The Camels led by as many as 10 in the opening half and 38-30 at the break. Clemons scored 17 first-half points and Burk 11 as the Camels made 7-of-14 threes and shot 48 percent from the floor overall in addition to hitting 9-of-10 from the line.
Saint Louis made just 9-of-22 from the floor (41 percent) in the first period, 3-of-8 from three-point distance.
Clemons extended the nation's longest active double-figure scoring streak to 59 games when he hit a pair of free throws with 6:09 left in the opening half. He knocked down a wing three for a 29-19 edge before Hines scored eight-straight points to bring SLU within 29-27 with 3:13 remaining in the period.
However, Burk nailed back-to-back triples and Clemons connected from long range to stake the Camels to an 8-point edge at intermission.
Clemons (1653 points in 74 games) moved by Mark Mocnik (1635 from 1988-93) into 6th place on the all-time CU scoring list.
Campbell hosts Allen Friday at 2 p.m. in its final game before starting Big South play Dec. 30 at UNC Asheville.
