Baseball tops Quinnipiac 10-7 Saturday

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell erased a 5-1 deficit with a six-run fourth and held on for a 10-7 win Saturday over visiting Quinnipiac at Jim Perry Stadium, evening the three game series.

Campbell moved to 3-3 with the win, while Quinnipiac dropped to 4-2 on the season. The Bobcats claimed the series opener 7-5 Friday night. The third and deciding game will feature a 1 p.m. first pitch Sunday.

The Camels trailed 5-1 after Quinnipiac's four-run fourth, responding with a six-run frame in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-5 lead.

Christian Jones reached on an error to lead off the inning, scoring the first run of the rally on a wild pitch. Drew Butler followed with a RBI single, later scoring on an error. Cole Hallum's second home run of the season, a solo shot to left, tied the game at 5-all with one out. Bryce Myers put the Camels up 7-5 with a two-run single up the middle four batters later.

Jimmy Monaghan added a RBI single in the fifth. Campbell tacked on two more runs in the sixth with Jones scoring on another Quinnipiac miscue and Adam Wyse knocking in Butler on a double down the left field line.

Tyson Messer (2-0) picked up the win for Campbell, working 5 1/3 in relief with two runs, one earned, on a hit with three strikeouts and two walks. Messer entered the game with two away in the fourth, retiring the Bobcats in order in the fifth, seventh and eighth.

Campbell starter Wyatt Tyson allowed four runs on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks in three innings. Wes Noble bridged the gap, working 2/3 of an inning with a run on two hits, strikeout out and walking one apiece.

Colin Donnelly (0-1) took the loss for QU in relief, surrendering two runs on two hits with a strikeout and three walks. Brandon Shileikis started on the mound for Quinnipiac, allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits with three strikeouts and three walks in 3 1/3 innings.

Campbell stole 10 bases in the game, the most in a single outing since 2010. Butler became the fourth Camel to steal four bases in a single game, and the first since Cameron Nelson in 2010. Wyse also stole three bases on the day.

Butler went 2-for-5 with a RBI and three runs scored in the win, while Jeff Hahs was 3-for-5 with a RBI and a run. Myers also went 2-for-5, notching a pair of RBI.

Mike Palladino recorded a 2-for-3 effort with a RBI and a run for the Bobcats, while Liam Scafariello knocked in two. Joseph Burns also scored twice for the Bobcats.

Campbell returns to action next weekend, hosting Ohio State in Buies Creek for a three game series, March 3-5. The Camels head on the road for the first time this season March 7-8 at Georgia Southern.
