BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Former Campbell women's soccer great Ashley Clark has signed with the Le Havre Athletic Club in Normandy, France, the club announced last week. The forward will leave for France the second week in August to begin training with the team.
The Cary, N.C., native has been playing professionally since graduating from Campbell in May of 2015. Clark spent the 2016 season with Tierps IF, a Swedish League Division I team. She played in all 21 games and led the team in points with 13 goals and three assists.
After spending a year abroad, Clark returned to the United States to participate in preseason training with the NC Courage in Cary. Following a productive preseason with the squad, Clark joined the Boston Breakers Reserves for the 2017 season. The Reserves, a subsidiary of the NWSL Boston Breakers organization, plays in the Women's Premier Soccer League and is coached by Dushawne Simpson. Clark scored 11 goals and notched five assists for the Breakers in 2017, leading the team to a Final Four appearance in the WPSL Championships. After winning the East Division, the Reserves fell to the Gulf Coast Texans, 1-0, on July 29 at the Silverlakes Sports Complex in Corona, Calif. She will play alongside fellow Reserves teammate McKenzie Hollenbaugh in France during the upcoming season.
"Ashley has worked extremely hard at pursuing a professional playing career, marking a very definitive path for herself," said head coach
Samar Azem. "She was very successful with Tierps FC in Sweden and prepared for this next step by training in the highest league in women's professional soccer, emerging as a standout in her role with the Breaker's reserve team."
Azem continued, "We are all excited to see her future success with one of France's up and coming teams."
She is one of four former Campbell women's soccer players to advance to the professional ranks after leaving the Creek. Pirjo Leppikangas (2010-11) played for PK-35 Vantaa of Finland, Taylor Brown (2010-12) competed for NiceFutis in Pori, Finland, and former CU goalkeeper Ryann Torrero (2010-12) played professionally, both domestically and abroad.
Clark was a member of the Campbell women's soccer program from 2011 to 2015, where she proved herself to be one of the greatest attacking threats in program history. She racked up a plethora of Big South honors during her distinguished career at CU, including First Team All-Big South accolades four times (2011-12, 2014-15), Big South All-Freshman team in 2011, Big South All-Tournament team in 2015 and Big South Attacking Player of the Week on five occasions. In addition, she was named the 2015 Big South Attacking Player of the Year following her senior season, during which she recorded 44 points after scoring 17 goals and notching 10 assists.
Her offensive dominance is evidenced by her continued presence throughout the Campbell women's soccer record book two years after leaving the Creek. Clark ranks second all-time in career goals with 46 and fourth in assists with 22. Her 114 total points rank second in program history, only behind Jenn Stephenson (1994-97) who tallied 60 goals and 23 assists to total 143 points. Clark's 357 shots over the course of her tenure as a Camel is ranked first in history, with the second place player 93 shots behind.
