Clemons’ buzzer-beater lifts CU over High Point 65-64

Camels rally from nine down with 2:03 left to win 3rd-straight game

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Chris Clemons hit a pullup three at the buzzer to lift Campbell to a 65-64 win Friday night at Gore Arena.  Clemons scored 16 of his game-high 25 points in the second half and the Camels (9-8, 3-2) closed the game on a 12-2 run to win their third-straight Big South Conference game.

Andre Fox led High Point (7-9, 2-3) with 20 points and his pullup 17-foot jumper gave the Panthers their largest lead (62-53) with 2:03 remaining.  Clemons' triple cut the gap to six with 1:45; then Marcus Burk stole the ball and hit a short jumper in the lane just nine seconds later to bring Campbell within 62-58 with 1:36 remaining.

The Camels stopped High Point on the next possession when Andrew Eudy blocked Ricky Madison's attempt and High Point turned the ball over on a shot clock violation. However, Clemons was whistled for a charge with 1:01 to play.

Fox missed a leaner in the lane on the next possession and Clemons immediately drove to the bucket to cut the gap to 62-60 with 27.1 seconds to play. An 80 percent free throw shooter, Fox went 1-of-2 from the line with 25.8 remaining; then Cory Gensler scored on a layup to bring the Camels within one (63-62) with 17.9 to go.

Fox again missed the first; then made the second free throw for a two-point High Point edge with 16.9 seconds.  Without any time outs remaining, Gensler fed Clemons' who pulled up from 25 feet on the right wing to bury his second career game-winning shot in a Camel uniform.

Clemons entered the game as the nation's sixth-leading scorer (24.1) and tallied eight of his 25 Friday night in the final 1:45, while dealing four assists and making three steals.  Gensler added 13 points, including 3-of-4 from three, plus assists, while Burk finished with 11 points and four steals.

The Big South Conference's top shooting team, Campbell entered the game hitting better than 50 percent of its shots, but made only 9-of-27 in the opening period.  However, the Camels knocked down 16-of-25 (.640) in the final half and finished the game at 48.1 percent (25-52), 8-of-26 from three (.308) and 7-of-10 from the line.

High Point shot 46 percent from the field, made 6-of-14 (.429) beyond the arc and 10-of-15 from the stripe.  Jahaad Proctor added 11 points for the Panthers and Madison 10 off the bench.

In an opening half where the lead changed 10 times and the score was tied on three occasions, High Point closed their period on a 9-0 run to take a 33-24 edge into the dressing room.

Campbell surged in front after starting the second period on a 14-3 burst and Clemons' spinning layup gave the Camels a 38-36 edge with 14:00 remaining.  High Point responded with an 18-5 run, hitting 8-of-9 shots in the process, and pushed the gap to 60-51 on Fox's trey from the top of the key with 3:03 to go.

CU improved to 7-3 at home this season, while High Point dropped to 1-6 on the road and lost its second-straight game overall.

The pre-season Big South player of the year, Clemons extended the nation's longest active double-figure scoring streak to 65 games and logged his 47th career game of 20, or more, points.

The Camels return to action Monday in a 7:00 p.m. start at Longwood (5-13, 2-3), which defeated Liberty 58-51 Friday night.
