LEXINGTON, Va. – Samuel Adams,
Chigozie Atavwigho and
Darius Prescott posted top-10 finishes on day one of competition at the Keydet Invitational on Friday at the Virginia Military Institute. In addition, three Camels posted season-best performances at the Corps Physical Training Facility.
The throwers opened up day one of the Appalachian Open on Friday afternoon, as
Jasmine Brown,
Cody Stewart and Cailtyn Vester competed in the weight throw at the Holmes Convocation Center.
SPRINTS/HURDLES
Adams (6.95s) and
Khai McLin (7.02s) qualified for the semifinal of the 60m after finishing in 10th and 17th place in the morning's preliminary round. In addition,
C. Daequon Carr tied for 31st with a time of 7.13s.
His time of 6.95 in the prelims was a lifetime best and he followed it up with a 7.01s in the semifinal to finish in 16th place. McLin led the way with a season-best of 6.91s to finish in 12th place. The junior's time was just 0.03 seconds off of his PR and 0.09 shy of the school record in the event.
Atavwigho kicked off Friday's events in the Keydet Invitational by clocking in at 8.47s in the 60m hurdles to place 13th and advance for the semifinals later in the afternoon. The East Lake, Fla., native ran a season-best time of 8.34 in the semis to finish ninth, just one position short of the final.
Sabina Allen clocked in at 7.74s in the preliminary round of the 60m to place 11th and advance to the semifinal. Later in the afternoon, she ran a 7.77s in the semifinal to finish in 15th place.
Collin Cooper and
Trevon Compito ran in their first 500m of the 2017-18 season, with both placing in the top-20. Cooper clocked in at 1:09.02 to finish in 14th place, while Compito ran a 1:10.60 to place 20th.
JUMPS
Prescott posted a best mark of 13.74m in the triple jump to finish in seventh place among all competitors. This is Prescott's second time competing in the triple jump this season, when he recorded a 14.59m mark at the Clemson Orange & Purple Invite on Jan. 6.
