CHATTANOOGA, TENN. –
Josh Heil finished runner-up at 149 and
Korbin Meink placed fourth at 125, highlighting day two action for Campbell at the 2018 Southern Scuffle.
Heil, a sophomore Camel wrestling unattached, advanced to a finals appearance after topping Jared Prince of Navy with a 4-3 decision, the tournament's third seed at 149, and ranked No. 11 at 141. Heil met the nation's 149 pound No. 1 Zain Retherford of Penn State in Tuesday's finals, with the top-ranked Retherford earning the fall (4:39) and the Southern Scuffle individual title.
???????Heil moved on to the semifinal round after taking down two-time All-American and current No. 6 Max Thomsen of Northern Iowa, with a 3-2 decision on Monday. Heil is the first Camel to ever make the Southern Scuffle finals.
After going 2-1 on Monday, Meink advanced early Tuesday via a disqualification in the 125 bracket, then topped Stanford's Gabe Townsell 4-3. The Campbell freshman picked up a 5-2 victory over Cal State Bakersfield's Sergio Mendez to reach the 125 consolation final, where fourth-seeded and No. 9 Louie Hayes defeated Meink by tech fall 19-4 (7:00).
Also in action Tuesday were
Nathan Boston at 133 and
Quentin Perez at 165 pounds.
Boston fell to N.C. State's Jamel Morris 3-0, while Perez dropped his opening bout of the day to No. 23 Keilan Torres of Northern Colorado by fall (2:09).
Campbell finished 16
th of 24 teams in the competitive Southern Scuffle field. No. 1 Penn State took the team tournament title. Penn State's Shakur Rasheed was named the tournament's most outstanding wrestler.
Campbell will round out 2017-18 tournament competition at the David H. Lehman F&M Open on January 6. The Camels will head to the Virginia Duals January 12-13 before opening Southern Conference action January 18, hosting Appalachian State.
