BUIES CREEK, N.C. –
Chris Clemons knocked down his second game-winning 3-pointer in the last nine days to lift Campbell to a 59-56 win over Big South Conference leader Radford on Sunday at Gore Arena.
Clemons' pull-up three swished through the net just before the horn sounded and the Camels (11-9, 5-3) raced off the bench to swarm the junior from Raleigh. After the officials reviewed the play, 0.3 seconds were put on the clock. Radford freshman Carlik Jones' half court heave bounded off the backboard and gave Campbell its fifth win in the last six games.
The nation's fourth-leading scorer, Clemons tallied 16 of his game-high 22 points in the opening half, but was held to just 1-of-7 shooting in the final period before he launched the winning bucket. He also hit a buzzer-beater Jan. 12 in CU's 65-64 victory over High Point.
Campbell held Radford (13-8, 6-2) to just 23 percent shooting (6-26) in the second half and with only one bucket from the floor over the final 3:35.
CU led 51-47 with 3:59 remaining after Clemons made the second of two free throws, but Randy Phillips scored underneath with 3:42 to play and Ed Polite, Jr., stole the ball on the inbound pass. Donald Hicks then sank a win three to put the Highlanders ahead 52-51 with 3:36 remaining.
With the shot clock winding down,
Cory Gensler found
Andrew Eudy open on the right wing and the center swished a three for a 54-52 Camel edge. CU led 56-53 before Jones converted an old-fashioned 3-point play with 11.1 seconds to tie the game.
After a timeout, Clemons received the inbound pass and calmly pulled up and launched the winning attempt from about 23 feet over the outstretched left arm of Jones.
Marcus Burk added 14 points, while
Shane Whitfield (8 rebounds) and Gensler chipped in eight apiece for the Camels, who shot just 39 percent (19-49) from the field, but out-rebounded the Highlanders 34-33 and limited the league's second-best team on the boards to just seven second-chance points.
Phillips was the lone Highlander in double figures with 10 points. Polite (8 rebounds) and Jones (6 assists) added nine points apiece for Radford, which lost for just the second time in its last 10 games.
Campbell won its eighth home game in the last nine contests at Gore Arena – the lone setback coming in overtime on Jan. 3 against Gardner-Webb.
Radford used a 13-2 run to take its largest lead of the opening half (30-22) when Hicks canned a three from the left wing with 4:08 remaining. However, the Camels closed the stanza on an 11-5 burst and cut the gap to just 35-33 on Whitfield's follow shot just before the horn.
Campbell whittled away at the margin and outscored the Highlanders 18-9 around the break. Whitfield's short bank shot put Campbell ahead 40-39 with 10:37 to play and marked CU's first lead since the 9:24 mark of the opening period.
The victory was Campbell's fourth-straight in the series with Radford and second by a 3-point margin at Gore Arena. CU also defeated the Highlanders in the semifinal round of the 2017 Big South Championship at Rock Hill, S.C.
Clemons ran the nation's longest active double-figure scoring streak to 68 games and extended his school record to 50 contests with at least 20 points.
Campbell begins a stretch of four road games over its next five dates Tuesday at Liberty in a 7:00 p.m. start at the Vines Center.
