Red-hot Camels douse Flames 94-85

CU sets school record with 23 three-pointers to win 6th in last 7 games

LYNCHBURG, VA. – Chris Clemons and Marcus Burk combined for 74 points and 20 three-point field goals to lead Campbell to a 94-85 win over Liberty Tuesday night at the Vines Center.

Clemons broke his own school record for points in a road game with 42, including 10-of-14 from 3-point distance, while Burk finished 10-of-16 from long range in a 32-point effort, one shy of his career record.

Clemons and Burk became the first teammates in Big South history to made 10 three-points each, while breaking the school mark for points in a game by teammates - 66 in last year's CIT first round by Clemons (39) and Burk (27) vs. Houston Baptist.

Campbell (12-9, 6-3) finished 23-of-33 (.697) from long distance – shattering the school record of 16 triples, set three times – most recently on Nov. 26 vs. USC Upstate.  The Camels won their third-straight game and sixth in the last seven outings while breaking VMI's record of 21 for most 3s ever in a Big South game against Charleston Southern on Jan. 13, 2007.

Andrew Eudy banked in a three from the right wing to open the game, Campbell opened the night on a 14-0 run and made its first 5 from long distance.

The Camels knocked down 11 of their first 13 three-point attempts and Clemons' pull-up trey pushed the Camel advantage to 39-22 with 7:10 left in the opening half.

Liberty, however, responded with a 14-3 burst, made 7 of its last 9 shots in the period and cut the gap to 47-42 at the break.

The Camels hit 65 percent (15-23) of their shots, including 13-of-20 triples, in the first period. Liberty made 12-of-23 from the floor and 6-of-11 threes, but knocked down 12-of-14 from the line, compared to just 4-of-6 for CU.

Scottie James scored underneath to bring Liberty even at 47-47 with 17:59 remaining, but Clemons' triple pushed Campbell back in front 50-47.  Liberty twice cut the gap to one, the last time on Caleb Homesley's lay-in with 13-22 to go.  Clemons again answered with a triple on the next possession that started a 13-4 burst and pushed the margin back to double figures.

Campbell canned 9-of-10 from the line, including 6-of-6 in 1-and-1 situtations, over the final 2:09 to seal its first-ever victory at the Vines Center after nine losses.

Georgie Pacheco-Ortiz led Liberty (12-10, 3-6), which dropped its fifth in a row, with 24 points before leaving with just over a minute left with a foot injury.  Ryan Kemrite added 17 and James 15 for the Flames, who shot 50 percent from the floor, made 9-of-24 from long distance and 24-of-28 from the stripe (.857).

Against a Liberty team that entered the night ranked eighth nationally in scoring defense (62.0) and tops in the Big South in field goal percentage defense (.403), Campbell finished the night shooting 64 percent (27-42) overall, 4-of-9 (.444) inside the arc.  CU hit 17-of-22 free throws, including 13-of-16 in the second half.

Clemons ran the nation's longest active double-figure scoring streak to 69 games and notched his seventh-straight outing with at least 20 points, while extending his school mark for scoring at least 30 to 13 games.

Campbell continues its road swing Saturday in a 2:00 p.m. tip at defending champion Winthrop.  The Camels defeated the Eagles 88-77 on Jan. 6 in Buies Creek.
