ROCK HILL, S.C. – Xavier Cooks led four players in double figures with 21 points and Winthrop held off Campbell 75-64 Saturday at the Winthrop Coliseum.
Bjorn Broman added 18 points, Anders Broman 12 and Josh Ferguson 11 for the Eagles (13-8, 7-3), who ended the game on a 9-0 run and won their sixth-straight game.
Andrew Eudy tied his career high with 22 points for Campbell (12-10, 6-4), which saw its three-game win streak halted.
Marcus Burk added 15 points, while the nation's fourth-leading scorer,
Chris Clemons, was held to a season-low 11.
After trailing by nine (39-30) at halftime, Campbell used a 12-4 run – capped by Burk's three – to tie the score at 56 with 8:34 to play.
Shane Whitfield gave the Camels their first lead (58-57) since the 16:07 mark of the opening half on his laying with 7:30 to go.
However, each time the Camels scored over the next 1:21, the Eagles answered. Bjorn Broman's left-handed scoop shot put Winthrop ahead 63-62 with 6:07 remaining and Ferguson's 3-point play extended the margin to four with 5:38 remaining.
Eudy's left-handed lay-in fell with 5:19 to play, but CU went 0-of-7 from the field and committed four turnovers down the stretch.
Campbell, which lost for just the second time in the last eight games, shot 43 percent from the floor, while Winthrop connected on 52 percent of its shots.
Four days after making a school-record 23 of 33 three-pointers in a 94-85 win at Liberty, Campbell hit just 3-of-19 beyond the arc (.158). Clemons (10-14) and Burk (10-16) combined to make 20-of-30 from long range at Liberty, but were only 1-of-12 Saturday.
Clemons extended his NCAA Division I-leading double figure scoring streak to 70 games and matched his career high with nine rebounds.
Cooks was 10-of-20 from the floor and grabbed 8 rebounds, while Bjorn Broman was 7-of-11 from the field and dealt 4 assists.
Winthrop committed only 10 fouls Saturday and the Camels went to the line just two times in the final period. In an 88-77 win over the Eagles three weeks ago at Buies Creek, Campbell knocked down 31-of-37 free throws.
The Camels return home Thursday (Feb. 1) to host pre-season favorite UNC Asheville in a 7:00 p.m. start.
