BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The remarkable shooting display of
Marcus Burk and
Chris Clemons in last night's 94-85 win at Liberty has been confirmed as a Division I record today by the NCAA Media Coordination and Statistics office.
Burk and Clemons became the first teammates in Division I history to each make at least 10 three-point shots in a game on Tuesday night at the Vines Center in Lynchburg, Va. A sophomore from Indianapolis, Burk canned 10-of-16 triples, while Clemons, a junior from Raleigh, knocked down 10-of-14.
The performance eclipsed that of Desmond Ferguson (10) and Rashad Phillips (8) of Detroit Mercy in an 88-48 win over Milwaukee on Feb. 26, 2000.
Burk made 11-of-17 shots overall in a 32-point effort that came one shy of his career-high 33-point outburst Nov. 18 at UNC Wilmington.
"My first three went down. Chris' first three went down. That's when I knew it was going to be a good night when everything started clicking," said Burk, whose 10 triples eclipsed his career high of eight set earlier this year at UNCW and matched vs. USC Upstate.
Clemons finished with a season-high 42 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the floor and 10-of-14 from the line to set school records for most points scored in a road game, in a Big South regular season contest, and most by a member of the junior class. He tallied a Big South and school record 51 points in last year's conference tournament quarterfinal win over UNC Asheville.
"We set a lot of screens, ran off a lot of screens off the ball, and some of our shots were even contested, and we were still making them," said Clemons. "We were very fortunate tonight."
Clemons ran the nation's longest active double-figure scoring streak to 69 games and notched his seventh-straight outing with at least 20 points, while extending his school record for scoring at least 30 points to 13 games. His scoring average climbed to 25.2 – third-highest among Division I players.
Burk and Clemons combined to make 22 of Campbell's 27 field goals and 20 of the team's school-record 23-of-33 triples on the night.
"I've never seen anything like it," said fifth-year Campbell head coach
Kevin McGeehan. "They were both lights-out. Our team plays together, we share the ball and we've got good shooters. If you're willing to throw the ball to the next guy and have faith in him making the shot, it's going to go in a lot more often than not."
Campbell shot 64.3 percent from the field and finished with 94 points against a Liberty team that entered the game ranked eighth in the country in scoring defense (62.0).
In addition to the NCAA mark of becoming the first teammates to tally double-figure three-pointers in a game, last night's performance included at least eight school and Big South Conference records.
Campbell's 23 triples were the most ever by a team in a Big South regular season game – and just one shy of the league mark of 24 VMI hit against Southern Virginia in 2009.
CU shattered the old mark school mark for treys in a game (16) that was equaled Nov. 26 against USC Upstate.
The team's overall shooting percentage (64.3) was a Campbell standard in a Big South regular season contest, topping the 63.5 percent mark established Feb. 20, 1989 vs. Radford. Overall, last night's shooting display was the eighth-most accurate in Campbell's Division I era (since 1977-78).
Individually, in addition to Clemons' mark for road and Big South regular season games, he and Burk surpassed the school record for points by two players. They set the previous record (66) when Clemons had 39 and Burk 27 in last year's first round win over Houston Baptist in the CollegeInsider.com post-season tournament.
Along with
Andrew Eudy's seven points, Clemons and Burk also broke the school standard for points in a game by three players (81), surpassing the 77 that Clemons, Burk and
Shane Whitfield (11) compiled vs. HBU.
Clemons' 3-point 71.4 percent effort beyond the arc (10-14) also broke the 64.7 record set by Scott Neely when he made a school-record 11 triples in 17 attempts Jan. 29, 1994 at Coastal Carolina.
Overall, Campbell won its third-straight game and sixth in the last seven outings to improve to 6-3 in the Big South, 12-9 overall, midway through the conference season. Campbell is off to its best start in league play since the 2011-12 squad opened the Big South schedule with seven wins in nine games.
"I'm proud of the team, they're doing a good job coming together, finding their identity, and hopefully we can carry that into the second half of the league."
A number of NCAA Division I conferences experimented with the 3-point line in the early 1980s, but the rule wasn't adopted universally until 1986-87, when the line was set at 19-feet, 9-inches. The arc was moved back to 20-feet, 9-inches for the men in 2008.
Campbell continues its stretch of four road games in five dates Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. date at Winthrop. In a rematch of last year's Big South final, the Camels defeated the Eagles 88-77 Jan. 6 in Buies Creek.
