BUIES CREEK, N.C. – MaCio Teague scored a career-high 36 points to lead UNC Asheville by Campbell Thursday night at Gore Arena.
Teague had the first 10 in a decisive 16-0 run early in the second half that provided a double-figure cushion for the Bulldogs (15-9, 8-3), who won their fourth-straight game and keep Asheville in a tie for first place in the league with Radford.
Chris Clemons led Campbell (12-11, 6-5) with 23 points and moved into a tie for second place on the school's all-time scoring list.
Andrew Eudy added 13 and
Marcus Burk 10 for the Camels, who lost their second in a row after winning three-straight.
Clemons, who missed four minutes in the first half after going down awkwardly on a drive to the hoop, now has 1947 points in 86 games. Sam Staggers also scored 1947 in his career from 1973-77. Jonathan Rodriguez owns the school record with 2153 points in his career that spanned 2006-10.
The 2017 Big South freshman of the year, Teague scored 22 of his points in the second half on 9-of-13 shooting, including 6-of-6 inside the arc. On the night, the sophomore guard hit 14-of-23 shots, 7-of-15 threes, and grabbed six rebounds. Ahmad Thomas added 8 points, 4 assists and 3 steals for Asheville, which shot 59 percent in the second half (13-22), 45 percent (24-53) for the game.
After Clemons' hanging shot in the lane gave the Camels a 35-33 lead with 18:12 to play, Teague responded on the next possession with a jumper to start the 16-0 rally. Campbell went more than 7:00 without points and missed 10-straight shots during Asheville's rally capped by Teague's lay-in that pushed the margin to 49-35 with 11:42 to play. CU twice cut the gap to single digits, but never drew closer than seven down the stretch.
Campbell was held to a season-low 57 points after hitting 40 percent (22-55) from the field and making 7-of-23 beyond the arc (.304). The Big South pre-season favorite Bulldogs swept the season series by a total of 13 points after an 85-79 win Dec. 30 at Asheville.
After entering the game as the nation's fifth-leading scorer (24.4), Clemons finished the night 8-of-19 from the field and 4-of-10 from 3-point distance. He extended the nation's longest active double figure scoring streak to 71 games after tallying 13 first-half points.
Campbell's loss was just its second in its last nine home games at Gore Arena.
The Camels are back in action Saturday with a 7:00 p.m. tip-off at High Point (10-12, 5-6).
