CLINTON, S.C. –
Chris Clemons and
Andrew Eudy combined for 50 points and Campbell ended the game on a 9-2 run to defeat Presbyterian 83-79 Tuesday night at the Templeton Center.
Clemons scored 28 points, while Eudy added a career-high 22 for the Camels (8-8, 2-2 Big South), who trailed by as many as eight in the second half.
Shane Whitfield added 12 points and put the Camels in front for good (78-77) with 1:30 to play on a drive to the bucket.
After a defensive stop,
Marcus Burk connected from long range and the Camels led 81-77 with 55 seconds to go. Davon Bell cut the gap to 81-79 on a layup with 37 seconds remaining and PC opted to defend rather than foul.
Clemons missed a deep three, but Eudy grabbed the offensive rebound and kicked the ball back to Clemons, who was fouled with 5.4 remaining. The nation's sixth-leading scorer (24.1 points per game) hit both free throws for the final margin.
After a 33-point effort in Saturday's win against defending champ Winthrop, Clemons hit 8-of-13 from the floor, including 2-of-4 threes, and 10-of-11 from the line Tuesday. Eudy, who hit his career high for the third time in four games, made 9-of-16 from the floor, 4-of-5 from the stripe, and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Bell led Presbyterian (8-9, 1-3) with 26 points and Reggie Dillard scored 25 on 9-of-13 shooting for the Blue Hose, who shot 52 percent from the field and made 10-of-23 beyond the arc. The loss was the second-straight for Presbyterian at home after the Blue Hose won their first six this season at the Templeton Center.
Campbell won its second-straight outing after hitting 54.5 percent (30-55) from the field and 20-of-22 (.909) from the line, including 16-of-17 in the final stanza. The victory was the fifth-straight for the Camels in the series and CU improved to 5-1 all-time in Clinton.
The Camels led by as many as eight in the opening half, but the Blue Hose made their last six shots and trailed by just two (37-35) at the break when Bell's three swished at the horn.
Presbyterian made six of its first seven attempts the second period and capped a 16-4 run around the half on Romeo Crouch's layup that put the hosts in front 48-41 with 16:00 remaining. Dillard's deep wing three pushed the gap to 66-58 with 7:38 to play before the Camels rallied.
Whitfield's tip-in cut the gap to 69-66 with 5:08 to play and the Presbyterian bench was whistled for a technical foul after arguing that the Campbell forward touched the ball on the rim. Clemons knocked down both foul shots to pull CU within 69-68.
Eudy opened league play with a 16-point effort Dec. 30 at UNC Asheville and topped that with 17 points vs. Gardner-Webb last Wednesday. Clemons extended his NCAA Division I-leading streak to 64-straight double-figure scoring games with 11 before the break.
The Camels return home to host High Point Friday at 7:00 p.m.
