Women's hoops picked fifth in preseason poll

CHARLOTTE, N.C.– As is tradition, the women's basketball coaches of the Big South Conference have peered into the future to predict the fortunes of the league's 11 programs.

In the 2018-19 iteration of the Big South Preseason Poll, the Campbell Fighting Camels women's basketball team has been picked to finish fifth.

However, as most sports fans know, these premonitions are hardly written in stone.

"Going into my 11th year in the Big South, I know not to put a lot into preseason polls," said third-year Campbell coach Ronny Fisher.  "Obviously, the goal is to be at the top and it does motivate you but, the league is going to be decided by who dribbles, passes and defends the best."

Radford is the league's preseason favorite, garnering nine first place votes.  High Point, which picked up two first place tallies, is expected to finish as the Big South runner up.

UNC Asheville and Big South newcomer Hampton are the coaches' picks to wind up in the third and fourth positions, respectively, come March.

The Camels welcome back three starters and 10 letterwinners from last year's squad that finished 15-15 and earned a first-round bye in the Big South tournament.

Campbell opens its 2018-19 campaign on Nov. 6 when it welcomes Old Dominion to Gore Arena. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m.
