ATHENS, OHIO – Ohio used a 12-2 run midway through the second half and held off visiting Campbell down the stretch to claim an 81-73 victory Monday at the Ohio Convocation Center.
Jason Carter scored 24 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor and 8-of-10 from the line for the Bobcats (2-0), who made 12-of-19 from the field in the second half (63 percent).
Chris Clemons led Campbell (1-2) with 26 points, while
Isaac Chatman added 16 and
Andrew Eudy 12 for the Camels, who shot 61 percent in the opening half, but made only 10-of-32 (.313) after intermission.
Doug Taylor, Teyvion Kirk and Ben Vander Pleas added 14 each for Ohio and Jason Preston 12 for the Bobcats, who did not lead until Gavin Block's corner three with 12:50 to go pushed the hosts in front 49-46.
Cory Gensler's free throws brought Campbell within 57-55 with 7:18 remaining, but Eudy – Campbell's third-leading scorer and top paint defender – fouled out with 5:10 to go. Clemons' 3-point play cut the gap to 63-60 with 4:34 left, but Ohio stretched the margin to double figures (71-60) on Taylor's bucket with 1:42 to go and the Camels were unable to get closer than five down the stretch.
On the night, Ohio shot 49 percent (26-53) from the floor, made 7-of-18 threes (.389) and 22-of-33 (.667) and finished with a 40-32 edge on the glass. Campbell shot 43.6 percent (.24-55) overall made 10-of-29 from 3-point distance (.345) and 15-of-23 (.652) from the line, but was hampered by a season-high 19 turnovers.
Campbell led by as many as 12 in the first half when
Andrew Eudy finished a transition layup for a 23-11 edge that prompted Ohio head coach Saul Phillips to call timeout with 10:08 left in the half.
The Camels hit 11 of their first 16 shots (69 percent), including 6-of-10 from long range, but Ben Vander Plas hit four-straight threes and the Bobcats trimmed the margin to 36-35 with 1:11 left in the period. However, Eudy scored underneath on a thread-the-needle pass from Clemons and
Trey Spencer knocked down a three just before the buzzer to extend the CU lead to 41-35 at the break.
Campbell shot 60.9 percent (14-23) in the first half, hit 7-of-13 threes (.583), matched the taller Bobcats on the glass (17-17) and outscored the hosts 16-0 in transition. Ohio made 14-of-34 first-half shots, including 6-of-14 beyond the arc, and 1-of-2 from the stripe.
Clemons had 12 points in the opening half to reach double figures for the 85th-straight game, the longest active streak among all NCAA Division I players. Chatman had 11 before the break and Eudy 10.
Eudy's second half block was the 156th of his career and tied Henry Wilson (1985-89) for the school's all-time lead.
