MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA –
Chris Clemons scored 17 of his game-high 27 points in the second half and Campbell rallied from a 15-point deficit to claim a 66-59 win over Florida A&M Friday in the Jersey Mike's Jamaica Classic at the Montego Bay Convention Centre.
FAMU (2-1) knocked down seven first-half threes and led 40-25 after Justin Ravenel hit from beyond the arc with 17:58 to play. The lead stood at 14 (43-29) after Tracy Hector's bucket with 15:26 remaining before Clemons nailed a corner three to start a 19-0 Camel run.
Clemons had 10 points and
Trey Spencer six during the decisive burst for Campbell (2-2), which extended the rally to 24-3 on Spencer's steal and layup that pushed the led to 53-46 with 8:41 remaining.
The Rattlers had one last rally and tied the score at 54 on Rod Melton's trey with 6:22 to go.
Cory Gensler's 10-foot jumper at the end of the shot clock put CU back in front; FAMU missed nine of its next 10 shots and the Camels ended a two-game losing streak.
"I thought we were flat to start out with, obviously, but played an incredible final 15 minutes," said Campbell head coach
Kevin McGeehan. "We played with composure and kept chipping away."
Clemons, who entered the game as the nation's second-leading scorer (32.3), made 3-of-8 beyond the arc – and moved by Adam Fellers (316 from 1998-2002) into first place on Campbell's all-time 3-pointers made charts (318). He added 3 assists and 0 turnovers in 34 minutes while extending his double-figure scoring streak to 86 games – tied for sixth all-time and the longest active span among NCAA Division I players.
Andrew Eudy scored 10 points, dealt six assists, grabbed five rebounds, blocked two shots and had a pair of steals. A senior from Lebanon, Pa., Eudy broke the school career blocks record (156) set by Henry Wilson (1985-89) and now has 158 rejections in a Camel uniform.
Spencer added 11 points in 34 minutes off the bench, while
Isaac Chatman led the Camels with seven rebounds, and drew a pair of key charges down the stretch.
Ravenel led FAMU with 25 points, including 8-of-12 3-pointers, while Richard Anderson had 12 for the Rattlers, who shot just 32 percent (9-28) in the second period, but made 13 of 21 from long range (.619) on the day.
Campbell finished 24-of-51 from the field (.471), committed only two turnovers in the final period, and made 5 of their last 11 from 3 after missing nine of 11 in the opening period.
FAMU led by as many as 15 in the opening half when Ravenel hit a step-back three – his fifth trey of the half – to extend the margin to 31-17 with 1:54 left in the period. However, Clemons converted an old-fashioned 3-point play; then a 25-footer from the wing to pull the Camels within 31-25 at the break.
The Rattlers made 7-of-12 (.583) beyond the arc in the first half and held an 11-2 edge in points off turnovers as the Camels committed nine miscues before the break. Ravenel had 15 first-half points, while Clemons scored 10 in the opening period.
Campbell made 11-24 shots, but just 2-11 from the arc and 1-6 from the line before intermission. Clemons,
Ja'Cor Nelson, Chatman and Eudy all picked up two fouls before the break.
The Camels will meet Austin Peay, an 80-78 winner Friday over Central Connecticut State, Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
