Campbell defeats Austin Peay 78-72 to win Jamaica Classic division

Clemons (34) and Gensler (25) combine for 59 points

MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA – Chris Clemons and Cory Gensler combined for 59 points and Campbell shot 61 percent in the second half Sunday to defeat Austin Peay 78-72 and claim the Rose Hall Division title in the Jersey Mike's Jamaica Classic at the Montego Bay Convention Centre.

Clemons scored 34 points and Gensler added a career-high 25 for the Camels (3-2), who won their second-straight game.  Campbell finished with a 24-13 edge in points off turnovers and overcame a Governors squad that included a pair of 7-footers by shooting 12-of-24 from long range.

Isaac Chatman added 9 points on a trio of threes – and drew a charge with 16.4 seconds left as APSU tried to rally.  Clemons grabbed six rebounds, and dealt five assists for the Camels, who made 14-of-23 shots (.609) in the second period.

Terry Taylor led Austin Peay (2-3) with 17 points and 10 rebounds, Zach Glotta and Steve Harris had 13 each and 7-foot center Ivan Cucak 10 for the Governors, who led 49-46 with 16:10 to play.

However, the 5-foot-9 Clemons ignited the sellout crowd and a national cable tv audience on CBS Sports Network with a tomahawk slam in traffic and a wing three in a 13-2 burst that gave the Camels their largest lead (59-51) with 11:34 left.  The lead was 68-60 after Clemons scored at the rim with 5:14 to go.  On the next possession, Clemons drove for a 2-handed slam, but the bucket was waived off after Andrew Eudy was whistled for an illegal screen.

Austin Peay rallied, and cut the gap to three on four occasions down the stretch, but the Camels answered each time.  Dayton Gumm scored all 8 of his points in the final 4:03 – including a corner three that cut the gap to 68-65.  However, Andrew Eudy followed only bucket of the game – an up-and-under that set up his left-footed half hook over Cucak.

Taylor's post move brought the Governors within 70-67 with 2:37 remaining, but Gensler scored on a backdoor feed from Clemons.  Gumm's free throws brought APSU with 72-69 with 2:10 to play and the Governors had a chance to draw within one or tie after a Camel turnover, but Gumm's wing three bounced off and Gensler rebounded.

Chatman's three from the left corner extended the gap to 75-69, but Gumm responded with an old-fashioned three-point play.  Again the Camels worked the shot clock and Chatman fed Trey Spencer for a wing trey to push the lead back to six with 22 seconds remaining.  After Gumm was whistled for the charge, the Camels inbounded to Clemons and Austin Peay elected not to foul the 84 percent career free throw shooter as time expired.

After entering as the nation's second-leading scorer (31.0), Clemons made 12-of-23 shots, including 3-of-8 from long range, and 7-of-9 from the line to post his 18th career 30-plus point outing and extend his double-figure scoring streak to 87 games, the longest among all active players and sixth-best in NCAA Division I history.  The senior from Raleigh, N.C., has scored at least 26 points in each of Campbell's five games this season.

Campbell finished the day shooting a season-best 50.9 percent (28-55) from the floor, while making two more free throws (10-of-15) than the Governors attempted (8-8).  Austin Peay also shot 50.9 percent (29-57) from the field, but made only 6-of-21 from 3-point distance (.286) and finished with a 13-4 edge in second-chance points.

Austin Peay used an early 10-6 run to take a 10-6 lead on Taylor's follow bucket and free throw with 16:35 left in the opening half.  However, in a period where the lead changed six times and the score was tied on four occasions, Campbell grabbed the edge thanks to an 11-2 run.

The Governors led 27-23 when Glotta hit a pair of free throws after Isaac Chatman picked up his third foul with 5:49 to play in the first half.  However, the Camels made 4-straight shots, including a trio of Gensler threes in the 11-2 burst.  Gensler's wing three pushed the margin to 37-31 with 2:58 left and Campbell took a 41-37 lead into the dressing room.

Clemons had 18 first-half points and Gensler (4-5 threes) 14 for the Camels, who made 7-of-16 from long range in the opening period.  Austin Peay shot 54 percent (15-28) from the field in the first period, but committed 11 turnovers the Camels turned into 15 points.

The Camels return to action Saturday in a 12 noon start at Georgetown.
