Georgetown hangs on for 93-85 win over Camels

Clemons scores season-high 45 points, 27 in second half

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Chris Clemons scored 45 points and nearly engineered a late comeback, but Georgetown held on Saturday for a  93-85 win over Campbell at Capital One Arena.

The Hoyas (5-1) led by 22 (81-59) with 6:14 remaining before the nation's leading scorer orchestrated a 24-6 run as the Camels (3-3) cut the gap to just six twice down the stretch.

Trey Mourning – playing in front of his father, former Georgetown All-American and NBA Hall of Famer, Alonzo Mourning – hit career highs of 27 points and 12 rebounds to lead four Hoyas in double figures.  Freshman James Akinjo added 17 points, Jessie Govan had 13 and Josh LeBlanc 11 for Georgetown, which shot 49 percent (33-67) for the game, finished with a 41-32 edge on the boards, and made eight more free throw (20-24) than the Camels attempted (6-12).

In the city where his basketball idol – Allen Iverson – played collegiately, Clemons posted the second-highest scoring total in Campbell's Division I era (since '77-78) by tallying 27 second-half points – 15 in the final 5:05.

After Mourning's 3-point play gave Georgetown its largest lead, Trey Spencer, Andrew Eudy and Clemons each hit threes to ignite a 13-0 spurt the Camels stretched to 18-3 and 24-6.  However, Jahvon Blair and Akinjo combined to go 6-of-6 from the stripe in the final 20.1 seconds to halt a late rally.

Freshman Isaac Chatman added 14 points and Spencer nine (3-of-6 threes) for the Camels, who shot 58 percent (19-33) in the second half and made a season-high 15 threes (in 40 attempts). Cory Gensler also grabbed eight boards, while Eudy finished with five assists for CU, which shot 48.5 percent (32-66) on the day.

Clemons hit 16-of-28 shots overall, 9-of-19 beyond the arc, all 4 of his free throws, grabbed eight rebounds and dealt 3 assists. The outburst was the most by any individual against a Division I opponent this year and fell just six shy of his school- and Big South-record 51-point total against UNC Asheville in the 2017 Big South quarterfinals.

"Our guys fought hard," said Campbell head coach Kevin McGeehan.  "The game was kind of won in the paint. Plays were happening right under the basket a lot. All of those either led to a basket or a foul.   We've been turning teams over at a better rate. They did a really good job taking care of the ball, and we didn't get a good enough job getting our finger tips on it and getting out in transition.  Obviously, Chris had a terrific game, but nothing he does surprises me."

The nation's leading scorer, Chris Clemons (33.8), Clemons posted his 19th career 30-plus point outing and extended his double-figure scoring streak to 88 games, the longest among all active players and sixth-best in NCAA Division I history.  He eclipsed his previous season high of 44 points in the opener against UNC Wilmington.

Georgetown opened the game on a 10-0 run, but the Camels answered with a 10-2 burst and drew within 12-10 on Trey Spencer's corner three with 14:17 to play in the opening half.  The Hoyas extended the margin to 35-19 on Mourning's put back and one, but Spencer knocked down a three and Clemons connected twice from long distance in a 10-0 flurry to bring CU within 35-29.

Clemons' alley oop dunk in transition off Ja'Cor Nelson's pass cut the Georgetown lead to 39-33 with 2:16 left in the period, but the Hoyas closed the half on an 8-0 stretch and led 47-33 at the break.

Georgetown hit 17-of-34 (.500) of its first half shots, including 5-of-10 from 3-point distance and 8-of-10 from the line, while holding a 24-16 edge on the glass.  Campbell shot 39 percent (13-33) in the first period, 6-of-20 (.300) beyond the arc and made just 1-of-7 (.143) free throws.

Campbell returns home Thursday (Nov. 29) to host Trinity Baptist in a 7 p.m. tipoff.
