Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

ODU spoils Campbell's season opener

BUIES CREEK, N.C.—Old Dominion used a 13-0 run midway through the second quarter to pull away in a close game and, ultimately, spoil the Campbell women's basketball team's season opener, 83-59, Tuesday evening at Gore Arena.

Freshman Lauren Carter impressed in her collegiate debut, leading Campbell's three double-digit scorers with 15 points.  Sophomores Ashlyn Hampton and Kyra Davis also reached double figures with 10 points apiece.

Four Monarchs scored in double figures, led by Ajah Wayne who tossed in a game-high 22.

"It was going to take a really good team effort and we weren't able to give that on the defensive end, which was disappointing," said Campbell head coach Ronny Fisher. "Offensively, I thought we did some nice things and got some good inside-out play.  Lauren had some nice plays and we had a couple of post players—Ashlyn and Kyra—who got to double figures."

ODU used the opening quarter to build an eight-point lead, which Campbell immediately chipping away as the second frame got underway.

Kyra Davis hit a 3-pointer to spark a 9-0 run that gave the Camels a 21-20 advantage midway through the quarter.  A pair of layups from Hampton and Luana Serranho figured into the scoring streak that culminated with a Taya Bolden jumper at the 6:27 mark.

The Monarchs responded with the decisive run that pushed the score to 35-21 and parlayed that momentum into a 42-26 halftime edge.

"The was the difference in the game," said Fisher.  "We fought to come back and we got a little tired and we subbed.  Afterward, we weren't able to execute and defend at the same level. It was nice to see us come back and take that lead and there were some positives to take out of it, but we have to get better over the long haul."

A bright spot for the Camels came in the form of Bolden's game-high 11 rebounds.  The redshirt sophomore established herself as a force on the glass last season, pulling down ten or more rebounds in seven of her nine games before being lost for the season to injury.

As a team, Old Dominion held a slim 44-41 edge on the boards.

On the night, ODU connected on 26 of 61 attempts from the floor to shoot 44.6 percent.  Campbell shot a 20-for-61 32.8 percent.

The Camels (0-1) return to action on Friday when they visit Western Carolina for a 6 p.m. contest.

"We will learn a ton from this game," Fisher said.  "We'll see where we need to improve, get to work and we'll get ready for Western Carolina."
