Gideon Betz of Campbell University has been named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District® 3 men's soccer team by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The 2018 Big South Conference men's soccer scholar-athlete of the year, Betz carries a 4.0 grade-point average as a business administration major.
A two-time, first-team all-conference performer, Betz has played in 17 matches with 16 starts, missing two games due to injury. He enters Sunday's Big South Championship final at Presbyterian fourth on the team in minutes played (1518) and averages 89.3 per outing.
The junior co-captain from Schluchtern, Germany played all 110 minutes in CU's 0-0 draw Wednesday at No.-13 and top-seeded High Point in the Big South semifinals; then converted the team's first penalty kick in the shootout that sent the Camels to their first title game since 2008. Betz has scored twice and assisted on another goal while dividing his time between the central defense and right back.
Twice named to the Big South Presidential Honor Roll, Betz was named to the 2018 Big South all-academic team in addition to gaining first-team all-conference honors.
He was one of three Big South Conference players to earn Academic All-District recognition. Brian Stepanek of Gardner-Webb joined Betz on the District 3 team, while Presbyterian's Ricardo Hernandez earned a place on the District 4 squad.
Betz' recognition marks the first time a Campbell men's soccer player has received Academic All-District recognition since 2012. At least one Campbell student-athlete from the program's 21 sports has earned Academic All-District honors in each of the last 25 years.
Betz and the other first-team Academic All-District® 3 honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team (if necessary) Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in early December. District 3 includes all NCAA Division I schools in North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
