ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Bronaza Fitzgerald scored 12 second half points to lead UNC Asheville to a 38-33 victory over Campbell on Tuesday evening inside Kimmel Arena.
Fitzgerald also gathered nine rebounds, including four on the offensive end to lead the way for the Bulldogs (14-12, 11-4). As a team, Asheville outrebounded Campbell, 44-38, and turned 16 offensive boards into 10 second chance points.
Summer Price led Campbell (13-13, 6-9) in scoring for the fifth straight game, tallying 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting (45.4 percent) and grabbing eight boards.
Kyra Davis scored seven, while posting a team-high nine rebounds.
Campbell led by two after three quarters of play, 27-25, but a 10-2 run throughout the final frame, including six points from Fitzgerald, pushed the Bulldogs ahead for good.
CU led by as many as seven, 2:34 into the second half after back-to-back layups from Davis and
Lauren McNamara-Clement. The Camels led throughout the quarter and 3:28 into the fourth before the Bulldogs' final run.
Price led all scorers in the opening 20 minutes, scoring eight points on 50 percent (3-for-6) shooting, while grabbing four rebounds, all on the defensive end. In addition, Davis posted five points for CU.
Campbell held a two-point advantage, 9-7, entering the second quarter, but a 5-0 spurt from the home side put CU down by three. The Camel defense held the Bulldogs scoreless for more than four minutes, while the offense scored seven straight to reclaim the lead.
Along with Davis, McNamara-Clement also snagged nine rebounds and picked up one block. As a team, Campbell had seven blocks in the contest and five steals.
Campbell outscored Asheville in the paint, 24-18, but Asheville held the advantage in points off turnovers, fast break points and bench points.
Neither team shot higher than 30 percent in the contest, as CU was 27.7 percent (13-for-47) from the field and 9.1 percent (1-for-11) from downtown. Asheville shot 26.5 percent (13-for-49) overall and 25 percent (3-for-12) from long range.
Campbell returns home on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip-off against Winthrop for Senior Day.
