BUIES CREEK, N.C. – All three seniors scored in double figures on senior day to lead Campbell to a 57-45 victory over Winthrop Saturday afternoon inside Gore Arena.
Sarah Smith led all Campbell (14-13, 7-9) scorers with a season-high 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting (54.5 percent), while
MaKala Rouse poured in 11 points and
Summer Price scored 10 and snagged a team-high seven boards.
Anika Riley led the scoring for Winthrop (2-25, 1-15) with 15 points on 7-of-10 (70 percent) from the floor. Ronata Rogers also scored in double figures for the visitors, contributing 10 points.
Campbell led by just one early in the third but used an 11-4 run to take a 34-26 lead after a layup from Price.
Kyra Davis stretched Campbell's lead to double digits, 39-28, at the end of the quarter.
The Eagles cut the CU lead to single digits three separate times, including to nine points at 49-40 with 4:26 left, but a 6-0 spurt gave Campbell its largest lead of 15 with 1:54 remaining.
Winthrop led for 1:02 in the contest, all in the first quarter after a three from Riley and a free throw from Rogers. The Camels, trailing 4-2, responded with an 11-3 run to close out the quarter and lead by six.
CU stretched its first half lead to as many as eight, 17-9, after a layup from
Hannah Long, 2:34 into the second quarter. Winthrop used an 11-6 run to close Campbell's advantage to three, 23-20, headed into halftime.
Riley led all scorers with nine points at the half, while Smith had a team-high eight points for CU through 20 minutes. Rogers had a game-best five rebounds through the first two quarters, while a trio of Camels had four boards each.
Campbell dominated the paint, outscoring Winthrop 26-12, and turned 17 Eagle turnovers into 17 points. The Camels also held the advantage on the glass, outrebounding the visitors 40-32.
Campbell hosts Gardner-Webb on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for the home regular season finale.
