BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – A late 11-0 run propelled Campbell to a 78-70 victory over host Gardner-Webb Wednesday at Paul Porter Arena.
Chris Clemons became the first junior in Big South Conference history to pass the 2,000 career point barrier, during a 33-point outing. Freshman
Jordan Whitfield came off the Camel bench to score a career-high 12 points on four 3-pointers, while his older brother Shane added 12, plus five assists.
Marcus Burk added 11 points for Campbell (13-12, 7-6), which ended a three-game losing streak and dealt Gardner-Webb (12-14, 7-6) its first home loss of the season.
D.J. Laster topped Gardner-Webb with 19 points and 10 rebounds, David Efianayi added 16 points, while Liam O'Reilly chipped in 15, plus seven boards.
O'Reilly's 3-point play gave the Runnin' Bulldogs a 66-65 lead with 3:05 remaining, but
Shane Whitfield spun to the rim on the next possession to start Campbell's decisive rally. In a game that saw 12 lead changes and the score tied nine times, the Camels made their last five field goals to earn a season split with their in-state league rival.
Gardner-Webb, meanwhile, missed six of its next seven shots, while the Camels converted their final five from the field and made 4-of-5 free throws to seal the victory.
Clemons scored the 2000th and 2001st points of his career with 1:35 to play on a two-handed slam off
Andrew Eudy's assist. The 5-foot-9 junior from Raleigh added a pullup three and two from the line in the final 50 seconds to extend his school-record to 14 career 30-plus point games.
The nation's fifth-leading scorer, Clemons became only the 11th player in Big South records to reach the 2,000-point barrier and now has 2,006 in only 88 games.
Neither team led by more than seven for the first 39:10 before Clemons' final-minute triple. The Camels shot 54 percent (15-28) from the floor in the second half, 46 percent (27-59) for the game, and knocked down 12-of-27 (.444) beyond the arc.
Gardner-Webb shot 42 percent overall, hit 6-of-22 from 3-point distance, and 16-of-20 from the line, but lost for just the first time in 11 contests at Paul Porter Arena this season.
GWU led 34-33 after a wild first half that included nine lead changes and five ties. Clemons hit 5-of-9 threes and had 16 points before intermission to run his NCAA Division I-leading double-figure scoring streak to 73 games. Burk added 8 first-half points for the Camels, who knocked down 8-of-18 beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes.
Laster, O'Reilly and Efianayi each scored 7 first-half points for Gardner-Webb, which made 9-of-11 from the line, compared to just 1-of-4 for the Camels.
Campbell became the first Gardner-Webb Big South foe to score more than 61 points at Paul Porter Arena this year and also finished with a 35-34 edge on the glass.
The Camels return home Saturday to host Longwood at 4:30 p.m.
