Camels post 26 top-10 finishes in Winston-Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Campbell competed at the JDL FastTrack for the second time in five days on Thursday evening, this time for the JDL College Team Challenge. The Camels picked up 26 top-10 finishes over the course of the meet.  

"Today's meet was another great opportunity to compete and get to where we want to be for the conference meet in two weeks," said throws coach Jeff Klaves. "We had some really good individual performances and excelled as a team."

SPRINTS/HURDLES

Khai McLin picked up podium finishes in both the 60m and 200m dash for the Fighting Camels on Thursday. He finished third in the 60m dash with a time of 6.97s and followed up with an event title in the 200m with a time of 22.24s.

Samuel Adams and Chigozie Atavwigho also participated in the 60m and 200m at the JDL FastTrack. Adams (7.00s) finished fifth in the 60m and 13th in the 200m (23.25s), while Atavwigho (7.10s) placed 10th in the 60m and 12th in the 200m (23.18s).

In her first meet since the ETSU Invitational, Isis Brooks posted top-3 finishes in both the 60m and 200m dash for the Camels. She placed second in the 60m (7.83s) and third in the 200m (25.65s) in her hometown of Winston-Salem, N.C.

Deonica Reid also competed in the 60m for the Camels, earning a sixth place finish with a time of 7.98s. Deja Reid followed in 12th place with a time of 8.25s and Faith Lee finished 14th with a personal record of 8.31s.

Lee also ran in the 60m hurdles on Thursday evening, clocking in at a season-best of 9.25s to claim second place in the event. Her time is just 0.13s off of her personal best of 9.13, which she set at the 2017 A-Sun Indoor Championships during her freshman season at Jacksonville.

Janai Scott ran a 59.68s in the 400m to claim a fourth place finish in the event behind two athletes from NC Central and one out of Elon. This time is just shy of her lifetime best of 59.45s, which she set at the ETSU Invitational on Jan. 12.

Avonti Holt competed in the 200m and 400m for the Camels on Thursday, earning top-6 finishes in both events. She earned fifth place in the 200m with a time of 26.12s and clocked in at 1:00.03 in the 400m to take sixth place.

The duo of Trevon Compito and Collin Cooper both claimed top-10 finishes in the 400m for the Fighting Camels. Compito ran a time of 51.47s to place eighth and Cooper crossed the finish line in 52.01s to earn 10th place.

DISTANCE

Joan Maritim and Ali Bowen kicked off the JDL College Team Challenge with the 3000m on Thursday afternoon. Maritim clocked in at 10:32.72 to earn a second place finish, while Bowen ran a personal best of 10:56.48.

Campbell fielded a quartet of athletes for the men's mile, all of which placed within the top-10. Ronald Cheserek led the pack with a time of 4:29.92 to place third in his first collegiate mile. Jacob Burgamy followed right behind in fourth place with a time of 4:34.80. Billy Knabe (4:46.36) earned a sixth place finish, while Travis Gallimore (4:59.01) placed ninth.

In the women's mile, Madeline Fitch clocked in at 5:25.61 to pick up a third place finish for the Fighting Camels. Lize Botha followed closely behind in fifth place with a time of 5:29.77, which is less than three seconds off of her PR in the event.

JUMPS

Noah Tyson claimed the event title in the triple jump in Winston-Salem, leaping a season-best of 13.99m. He out-jumped Lenoir-Rhyne's Jaquay Mitchell, the second place finisher, by more than half a meter.

Brett Parks cleared the 4.25m bar in the pole vault to claim second place among all competitors. Sam Blumer (4.40m) of The Citadel was the was the only competitor who managed to out-jump Parks. On the women's side, Carrie Baker cleared the 3.00m bar to finish in fourth place.

THROWS

Caitlyn Vester improved upon her lifetime best in the weight throw by nearly 1.5m on Thursday, posting a best mark of 12.02m to finish ninth among all competitors. She recorded her career best mark on her third and final attempt of the evening.

Cody Stewart also posted a personal record in the weight throw with a best mark of 13.11m to capture a ninth place finish for the Camels. He improved upon his previous PR of 12.25m, which he set at the Appalachian Open on Jan. 20.
